04 Jan 02 - 03:48 PM (#621086) Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: gnu My sympathies. The only advice I can offer at a time like this is take it slow and easy and remember, it takes a few days to move, it takes a few months to make a house a home. Me, I am in my fourth month... I expect to have everthing straight by spring. Lazy or realistic ? Perhaps a bit of both. |

04 Jan 02 - 06:22 PM (#621196) Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Noreen I'm here!!!! A little later than predicted, Alan- just a few minor things to do first, such as shovelling snow so I could get the car up to my cottage to move out.. and taking apart and rebuilding my computer table when I thought I'd be able to move it in one piece... luckily I had help or I'd still be in bits, in more ways than one. I've got a kettle, tea bags, milk, water and electricity supply, and a chippy directly across the road- what else could i wish for? *grin* Sleep, at the moment... but I'd love to have a housewarming singing party. Best wait 'til the snow goes, and we have something to sit on (those happenings are not connected, as far as I know.) If this is drivel please excuse me as i am cream crackered. Thank you all for your good wishes, I am very touched. Will report back with more details when I am able. Noreen |

05 Jan 02 - 09:08 AM (#621464) Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: lady penelope Cream crackered = Knackered ( to be extremely tired or worn out - applies to inanimate objects as well ) I'm confused Noreen. You've moved from Bury to Bury, in Lancashire. Are you sure you've moved? Even if you discover you haven't, can we still have a house warming party ? Bury is quite a common name all over england, I could be completely wrong about this, but I think it comes from buriel mounds - a bury - of which there are loads, every where. TTFN M'Lady P. Hope you do better...it's much more comfortable when there are familiar things to look at. You said "a chippy directly across the road"? In the States, a chippy is out-of-date slang for a girl who is overly free with her favors. What does it mean on the other side of the pond? |

07 Jan 02 - 01:23 PM (#622773) Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Stilly River Sage This is interesting reading--and I have one question, a clarification of a clarification. The "chippy" I figured out, but what is skewered in a "donna kebab?" You're not talking a Sweeny Todd kind of establishment, are you? :) I'll be moving in the next month or so (doesn't mean much here, since I'm new to the list and most of you don't know me) but I have a small ritual when I move to a new place. As Noreen remarked, having the kettle and tea at the ready is vital, and a comfortable table and chair to use while drinking my tea. The first thing I do in a new place (even as stuff is being moved in) is to bake a loaf of bread and make a big pot of soup. These are the most visceral of smells I can think of, and immedately make the place feel like home. (It also helps calm people who are coming and going -- those I hope to talk into helping me move big clunky antique furniture, including my half-ton upright grand piano that has been in the family since 1884). 07 Jan 02 - 02:44 PM (#622811) Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Herga Kitty Doner kebabs aren't nearly as interesting. English chippies have been adapting to immigrant cuisines for many years.... when I was a student, chips with curry sauce were very popular. If I remember rightly, the Chinese takeaway at Bromyard is (was?) called the Shun Fat, which always seemed an amazing contradiction for a Chinese takeaway... Kitty |

07 Jan 02 - 08:01 PM (#623009) Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Noreen Indeed it would, Snuffy... I just leaned on a cupboard door in the kitchen and it came off it's hinges :0( (I didn't lean that hard!) It's a real English chippy across the road, no Doner Kebabs/E. Coli breeding grounds in sight! (A Doner kebab is a large cylyndrical conglomeration of unidenified spiced meat, about 2 feet long and 5" in diameter, skewered and kept warm indefinitely, slices being taken and inserted between bread with limp salad to young men rolling out of pubs at closing time....) I'm pleased with myself having got the cooker to work, but I still can't find anything! Thanks all for your support, I'm not finding it easy today. Noreen |
