BS: Where's The Music In Plymouth, England?

My friend and bandmate will be visiting Plymouth this June with his wife. He is a big fan of English Ales and traditional music. Would anyone be able to help give a couple suggestions as to places to go in the region? They will be traveling a bit by train I think so anywhere in the South region might work for them. Thank you! Cheers, Tom

a good site is Chris Ridley's Folknews Kernow, mostly Cornwall but he runs the Garland Ox (Friday) in Bodmin. I link to him on a subsidiary page of my site cresby.com
Nic Parsons Lives in Plymouth (and the Plymouth Shantymen do as it happens) so PM him here & see if he responds.
Distances are deceptive if you rely on Public Transport but Torquay has an FC
Bodmin & Torquay are both on the railway.
let us know what you find.

Keep going till you get to Bodmin. Wed Trewarmett near Tintagel, Mon the wellington, Boscastle both open tune and song sessions that can go on late, and during the Whit week at The Well Parc , trevone bay near Padstow they traditionally have a folk evening on the Thursday evening with visitors from far and near inc the Bacca Pips, bunch of.

Tintagel and Boscastle can be challenging places to get to if you don't have a car. Looe is on an offshoot of the railway line and they seemed to have plenty of live music going on in the pubs when I was there last year. I grew up in Cornwall. I can say that the geographical distances are not great, but Mr.Red is quite right when he says that they can be deceptive. The rural way of life is not always geared up to providing transport for night revellers. It's a good idea to stay somewhere near the venue if you are planning a night out and do not have a car. Plenty of good beer of course. Have fun and tell us about it.

You can stay at all the venues as they have accomodation.Local bus network is fairly reliable and frequent.
I should work for the tourist board.

Isn't there a site covering Devon run by What's Afoot magazine? I should link to it. There was a leaflet published by Pete the Heckler on FC's based on Exeter - not sure how far he went. The Barry Dransfield thread was started by Tim Salt who is associated with Topsham where Pete Heckles.

Thanks all! The Hyde Folk Club looks like a good place for them to start. Thanks Brian for the link. Like I said they don't go till June and they may decide to rent a car by then too to get around better. While we're on the subject, any good festivals towards the end of June in the South? Cheers, Tom

Jon Hislop and Kath ? know them all down that way. I am sure I've seen him post here. If I find an e-mail I'll PM you. There is always Crediton FF end of March, Pennymoor Song & Ale in the Black Dog at Black Dog (no dogs allowed in the pub!) early June. I'll be at Crediton so I better get a better fix on the date but I do remember it doesn't clash with a Cajun dance hearabouts on the 24th and Easter is the next week on I think.

GO TO BODMIN!!!!!!!
This is a club not to be missed if you relish a room full of people who sing throughout the night. The best club of its kind I have found in the last 10 years.
