Lyr Req: Who will(Who's gonna) pray for me?

Friends, I am seeking the lyrics to two songs, I think.

Who will pray for me?

Who's gonna pray for me.

Both are composed gospel songs, the first has been recorded several times I'm not sure about the second.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Could this be "Who Will Sing For Me"?, one version of which is attributed to Thomas Jefferson Farris and is sung at many funerals in Arkansas hill country.

If this is the song you are seeking,
Oft I sing for my friends,
When this cold form I see
When I reach my journey's end
Tell me who will sing for me

It is in the Mudcat database, a version, at least.

Thanks, Arkie, but it's definitely 'Pray'. Best regards, Fortunato

Hi, Fortunato... sent you a message to your personal page, but my computer is acting up, so I'm not sure it went through. Where are Dicho and Masato? I'll check my hymnals and see if I can find it.

Jerry

Thanks, Jerry, Masato has emailed me some websites where the song is listed, but no lyrics yet. Dicho has not reined in yet. I'll PM him.

Looks like I haven't helped with the message on "Sing." I will look some more. It is very difficult to look through the search engines since that phrase was used in talks and in many other ways. The ads for cds are all that come up easily.

Thanks, Dicho. I know the problem, I'm of course searching myself on the web. I was hoping on of you guys with strong gospel/country affiliations would have sung or have lyrics for these. They are listed by BMI and one is listed by Harry Fox, but no info on how to get in touch with the writers. Regards, Chance

Wysiwig, I don't know. I've only seen references to them in the BMI, Harry Fox, and websites for Conway Twitty and The Coon Creek Girls. I going by title alone, you see. It is the titles that intrigue me. Thanks, Chance

Makes me think of a song called I'm Wondering Who? recorded in the early 30s by a small white jazz group including Bix Beiderbecke - can't remember the name of the group.

When you find it- would you please check it against "Who Will Sing For Me?" The Carter Family sang that one.

Pinecastle Records has a sound clip and offers a cassette for $7.95- less bread than the cd, anyway. Songs of Praise and Glory, Dale Ann Bradley, PRC8008, www.pinecastle.com

Conway Twitty recorded "Who Will Pray for Me" in 1973(?); it's now on Who Will Pray For Me (with sound clip), and a compilation album (HERE and HERE). According to SongFile search of "Who Will Pray for Me", "Artist: CONWAY TWITTY; Writer(s): DARRELL STATLER, LORENE ALLEN." Dale Anne Bradley (with the New Coon Creek Girls) did this on Our Point of View (clips of Intro & Chorus are HERE) and on Songs Of Praise And Glory (HERE). White Oak Bluegrass Band recorded this on If I Could Only Have Your Love (HERE, no clip).

Masato, Thanks for all your help.

Thanks, WYSIWYG, and Jerry Rasmussen.

Well, I listened to Dale Ann Bradley's version last night. I found out what I wanted to know.

You see friends a friend of mine and I starting writing a song, collaborating, and we suddenly got wind that a similiar song was already out there.

Sure enough "Who will pray for me (when Mother's gone away) is so INCREDIBLY CLOSE in title, lyric and melody that we've had to abandon the project.

Regards, Fortunato

The sign of a true songwriter is acknowledging that something they are writing is similar to another song, AND THEN WRITING IT ANYWAY. If it isn't conscious, it's not plagiarism.. And, if the song is THAT obscure, who will know?

Write on!

Jerry - George Harrison might disagree, having suffered from comparisons between My Sweet Lord and He's So Fine by the Chiffons. Ever compared Riptide by Robert Palmer with One Sweet Letter From You?

Hey, Craig: Yeah, George got stung. But, you won't get in any trouble if your music doesn't sell. Folk music has always taken existing melodies and stories and changed them around to fit the times and pleasures of the folks who are singing them.

From: Jim Dixon

WHO WILL PRAY FOR ME
As sung by Conway Twitty on "Who Will Pray for Me" (1973)

My rough and rowdy ways
Have kept me from His grace
But there's hope for me 'cause mama's faith is strong.
She's the only hope I've got
To keep me in touch with God,
But who'll pray for me when mama's gone?

CHORUS: Who'll pray for me when mama's gone?
Who'll ask his forgiveness from then on?
Who'll care enough to talk to God
When her fleeting voice has stopped?
Who'll pray for me when mama's gone?

I guess I'm just too weak
To fall down on my knees
And talk to God like a man on my own.
He knows who I am.
She mentions me to Him,
But who'll pray for me when mama's gone?

CHORUS
Who'll pray for me when mama's gone?
