10 Jan 02 - 12:00 PM (#624904) Subject: Auction query; DVD interest? From: Peg Hi all; My friend Fritz, a bit of a techno-wizard, made a rather good DVD of a performance of mine at a pagan gathering in Florida this past November. He was merely shooting it on digital video but for whatever reason the audience was VERY quiet (I slayed 'em apparently--ha ha) and the audio quality was very good. So he made a DVD. It is about 20 minutes long. In it I sing The Happy Island in Gaelic, Westlin' Winds, The Greenwood Laddie, I But a Little Girl and a strange little Scots song called the Witches' Reel. Plus you get my silly profane patter in between songs. I am thinking of trying to get some copies of this made and putting them up for sale on the Mudcat auction, proceeds to be donated to Mudcat. Is there any interest in this sort of thing, before I go ahead and do |

10 Jan 02 - 01:29 PM (#624973) Subject: RE: Auction query; DVD interest? From: Clinton Hammond I'd pay slightly less to be able to download it... I have a chum that can burn DVDs and it would save the cost/hassle of shipping... ;-) |

10 Jan 02 - 03:31 PM (#625081) Subject: RE: Auction query; DVD interest? From: GUEST okay, good to know there is interest. I have no interest in uploading it to the internet. I really think the whole trend of trying to get music or video or books or whtever in this way cheapens the whole artistic process. Not to mention the quality is not as good as a direct copy. Plus it does make it easier for people to steal stuff.

10 Jan 02 - 03:49 PM (#625100) Subject: RE: Auction query; DVD interest? From: Clinton Hammond Like folk music has to worry about losing sales to 'theft'... So I'll buy my copy and I'll upload it... ;-) (not! LOL!!) I was only suggesting the download thing to help reduce shipping... Seriously... Tech question: Is it an actual DVD format, or is it a Video CD? If it's DVD format, I'm gonna assume that it's not North American format right?? No sense in buying something that I can't play at all...

10 Jan 02 - 03:56 PM (#625110) Subject: RE: Auction query; DVD interest? From: Jeri Why wouldn't the DVD be North American format? I thought there was only one DVD format? And Peg's in the US. If I had enough money, I'd bid on this. Peg's singing is gorgeous! |

10 Jan 02 - 04:11 PM (#625129) Subject: RE: Auction query; DVD interest? From: Clinton Hammond I got it into my head for a moment that Peg was on the other side of the pond... my mistake... Ta Jeri! But it is an issue then, for any Europeans who might wanna get the disk... ;-) There is NOT REMOELTY only 1 DVD format... that was one of the lies shoveld at people when DVD first came out... but like VHS, there are many formats around the world, and no such thing as a player that plays them all... That's one of my arguments in favour of the 'global' medium that is the internet... (but I'm not arguing that you should upload it if ya don't want to eh!) |

10 Jan 02 - 08:55 PM (#625452) Subject: RE: Auction query; DVD interest? From: Peg That was me as GUEST earlier, sorry! I am in Boston so I would just copy this in whatever seems easiest. Fritz made it on a Mac; I would try to get it copied where I work in the media services dept. I don't know anything about format or whatever...but I could let you know what it is in the auction. Thanks, Jeri! Peg

11 Jan 02 - 12:41 AM (#625557) Subject: RE: Auction query; DVD interest? From: Peg Gargoyle; this is not only not true, it is reprehensible thinking to anyone (including myslef) who makes part or all of their living actually CREATING something.

11 Jan 02 - 01:21 AM (#625578) Subject: RE: Auction query; DVD interest? From: Clinton Hammond "anyone" Let's not be hasty or presume to speak for others... Well... when I have recordings, I'm gonna make some of the CD, if not all available on my web site for download, because how else am I gonna reach a world wide market... But that's just MY choice... I guess I can sorta understand the reasoning of people who chose other than I do... And isn't that sorta the crux of the matter, that it should be a matter of choice?? That's why aboive I JOKED about uploading it after I'd bought it... it's not like I would... ;-) |
|
11 Jan 02 - 01:27 AM (#625582) Subject: RE: Auction query; DVD interest? From: Peg But it's NOT a matter of choice, Clinton. Unscrupulous people upload other people's work (be it music, literaure, video, whatever) and all of a sudden the authors or creators are losing the ability to make a living off their work because any numbnuts with a computer can download it for free... In principle or theory, sharing online is a nice idea. But apparently people will always steal when it means not paying for something they want; especially if there is no chance they'll get caught doing it. If you really don't grasp what is wrong about this then there is nothing more to say.

11 Jan 02 - 11:53 AM (#625817) Subject: RE: Auction query; DVD interest? From: Peg Clinton; just because you haven't made any idiotic homophobic remarks in a while doesn't mean I don't still consider you an asshole. You needn't tell me how to behave.

12 Jan 02 - 03:02 AM (#626432) Subject: RE: Auction query; DVD interest? From: Peg Well since I started this thread, and I don't much like to contemplate the fact that people think stealing other people's music and artistic work over the internet is acceptable, why not just let it die.
