Celtic banjo music on the internet

Subject: Celtic banjo music on the internet

Have just started playing 5-string banjo, with the aim of playing celtic (particularly scottish) tunes, a la Billy Connolly. Unfortunately Im having difficulty finding any arrangments. Does anyone know of resources, on the internet or otherwise, for this kind of thing or will I largely have to transcribe tunes myself?

Try Elderly Instruments. If you frail then try Ken Perlman's "Basic Clawhammer Banjo" or try Tony Sullivan's "The Irish G Banjo" or if you do 3 finger style try Tom Hanway's "Complete book of Irish & Celtic 5 String Banjo" all these can usualy be found at Elderly instruments at www.elderly.com

mereflesh - Ther have been many discussions about Banjos in the forum. If you go to the Threads front page and find the box named FILTER, type in banjo and in the box marked AGE click to 1 year, then click on the REFRESH button you will find a list longer than your screen. Some might be helpful, others not, but they are there.
One thread entitled Celtic music on 5 string banjo may have some of the information you require. Here is a link to it . There are a number of banjo websites mentioned in various threads, but I have been to busy to do more than just bookmark some for later assessment, so I am not sure what they contain. One which looks like a possible good starting point is The Banjo Hangout. It contains various resources and also links to other banjo sites.
It might also be worthwhile putting requests for specific tunes/songs as separate forum requests.
A lot could depend on what style or technique of banjo playing you use, and also if you are a complete novice, or already play banjo but wish to diversify. Give us more precise details of what you need to know and we may be able to give more specific help. If you give a country of residence, there might be a Mudcatter with local knowledge of somebody who can help you.

Have been playing fingerstyle guitar for years, so know the theory of what I'm doing but am currently translating skills across to the banjo. I myself am from Scotland and love hearing small bands that turn up in pubs all the time doing traditional music, and quite often they'll have banjo players (both 4 and 5 string). My searches for this type of music, as always, produces loads of Irish stuff, which is nice enough but not entirely what I'm looking for. I get the feeling that Scottish tunes are largely played by ear, and that I'll have to work from basic fiddle manuscript to build up any sort of repertoire. But, in the meantime, the above solutions are handy for getting going. Oh, and in style I suppose its closer to bluegrass than anything else.

Try this link and then look through more of the banjo books at Elderly's website. There are number that would be helpful, even if they are not specifically "Scottish" or "Celtic." For example, you might look carefully at Bella Fleck's book (also at Elderly).
