MIDI instrument jam sessions on the net

Does anybody know if it's possible for people with MIDI enabled instruments to get together and have a session over the net in real time? If so, how's it done - and does anybody else fel like having a go?

This has been a dream for many of us. I don't think the technology is quite there yet. Or it's there but too expensive to incorporate as yet. Paltalk has been alluding to this for a while but no real results. I don't understand the computer portion of it but I'll bet Jon Freeman, Max, or one of the Joe Clones could address it.

I certainly agree with the dream of joining in in real time - I hope it happens one day.

I'm not aware of any technology but MIDI perhaps presents far less of a problem that audio such as Paltalk in as much as I'd imagine it could be arranged in such a way that far less data transfer is involved if one was to consider MIDI instructions rather than samples of sound. I'd bet there would still be lags even if stuff could be done though, I have no clue how stuff could be kept in sync and it will probably turn out I am talking through my hat.

How about any of the professional programmers here (Steve, the likes of Mark Clark, Homeless, Mudguard and others would be the ones to address a question of that complexity - I have some basic idea of relational databases and of structured programming but that is my lot!) - any thoughts?
