A Heartfelt Thank You From Max

Wow, you folks are great. Sent the bill for 2 months of connectivity today. I'll send 2 months of electricity on Monday. I'll get more specific on our fund raising by weekend's end, but let me tell you, it was great. I think we got almost 6 months worth. I am truly touched by all of the letters I got full of kind words and cold hard cash. You folks are the kindest bunch of folkies there ever could be. Emily tells me I better do something special for all of you, so the thinking cap is on. I love you all, and I'll be in touch with each of you soon. Thank you.

Max, you big silly. You've already done something special for all of us. We're just saying 'thank you.' So all you have to do is say, "you're welcome." End of story, and now we all need to put our heads together to figure out something so we can avert future crisis and wear and tear on the Spirit o' the Max.

Love you and what you do and what what you do allows us to do, ww

I dunno, I think if Max feels thankful that's not a bad thing and it's not our place to talk him 'round it. It isn't always easy to ask for help, and when it comes you naturally feel grateful. When you can express that gratitude fully, it becomes easier to ask, the next time.

So Max, you're welcome!

From: catspaw49

Well Wyzzy got here first, but let me join her as the fly in the ointment. Amidst the chorus of thank yous and hurray for Max and Mudcat........Let's all back up a bit and let Max take that step.

Max, one of the toughest things to do in this life is to ask for help, but it has an equal.........the ability to say thanks. Those abilities are qualities that true winners possess. We are by culture taught the value of independence, so to ask for help is somehow less than admirable......Complete bullshit! The Beatles sang that "I get by with a little help from my friends," and it may be the best single line in any song they sang. Do you know what makes us all feel really great, warm and fuzzy, that feeling of pissing your pants in a dark wool suit? We all love to help somebody out!!!

Is there anything that makes you feel better? Man, what a rush to know that you gave something of yourself and benefitted another human being.....simply the best! Now when YOU are the one who benefits, the hardest thing to do is to say thanks. We often should say it, but it's really uncomfortable....and it shouldn't be. Like asking for help shouldn't be either. When someone says "Double Win" and that's what we all want, it's true. Just like now, we all win!!! But a lot of us are here on this thread saying, "Oh no Max, let us thank you." Now why is that?

Same reason really.......We are uncomfortable receiving thanks and want to downplay it as though it is no big deal. That's dumb. Try this scenario:

Waiter: Sir, I can't possibly take this $100. tip.
Patron: Okay, then here's a buck.
Waiter: Well, I thought I was worth more than that...

It gets down to a feeling of deservedness. The many 'Catters who have donated here over the years did so because they believed and loved you and this place. Saying thank you is something you need to do even though the real thank you is keeping the 'Cat alive. But a thank you from you is the second warm-fuzzy and that tops the cake!

What we should be saying here is "Max, you're welcome." That's hard to say too isn't it? When we say it, we always add qualifiers like, "No need to say thanks, the 'Cat is thanks enough."...........It may be, but it's our job to accept your thanks on this thread. Simple acceptance....very hard.

This is why it's always easier to give them to receive. We all need to be able to sincerely say "Thanks" and sincerely say, "You're welcome,".....no qualifiers and no embarassment. When friends can deal on that level with each other it shows the true friendship that does indeed exist.

One more thing.......You've taken two giant steps. You asked for help and you said a sincere thank you for it. NOW.....A lot of us have been harping on this one and NOW IS THE TIME TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!.....Let's get something going that funds at least the minimum every month. Let's get that going now. YOU have to ask though....I mean, you're the one who will have to monitor it a bit and say thanks or "Where's your dough Spaw?" Ask us for the bread and ask for whatever help you need. We'll be warm and fuzzy because we want to help and love to help....You can get warm and fuzzy by seeing how much we all do indeed love you and this place you created.......a Double Win, and the 'Cat goes on. Do it now Max.

Oh yeah.......You're welcome.

As a relatively recent Mudcat member who has discovered the joy of connecting up with family friends who live several states distant, I was happy to send a check to help keep Mudcat in place. I was pleased to see Max's heartfelt thanks. And he is welcome.

Now, as we all realize how close we came to losing this resource (and I've seen enough past thread titles that I haven't dipped into to know this isn't new) we need as individual group members to suggest possible solutions that we are able to actually assist with. For me, I see a possible solution in the writing of grants. I research grants for a university library, and can suggest places to find who would fund this kind of organization. I'm amazed that a site with the value of words, music, and interpretation isn't receiving any outside funding support. The key is for Mudcat management to learn how to fill out grant applications, to send them to precisely the right funders, and to understand exactly the strings that might be attached (in order to avoid the strings that are unpalatable).

Grants are at best supplemental funding, not an occasion to stop the individual donations. In fact, grants are more frequently awarded when the recipient can demonstrate a solid donor base. Success breeds success in this form of funding. I won't go into any more detail here, it is enough to simply suggest a way to assist Max in the future. This is such a remarkable site that has been established for such good reasons that it seems to me like a shoe-in for funding!

Stilly River/Maggie........I'm sure it comes as no surprise to you that your very fine idea has been discussed before in other "crisi" threads and that we do have several others here with experience and skill in the grant process. Many thanks for your offer too!!

Once again though, the real key here that Max has to ask for and then accept the help and get fully behind the process....something I know he can do, but it will demand a time drain as well as an emotional one. The place is loaded with talents on a variety of things that could benefit the 'Cat.

Max, if I'm sounding like your Dad or something, accept my apology. No one wants to be lectured to and the best Dads don't do it often. But I do know that it's tough to ask for some of this and I will continue to push you to use the ideas and talents available to you......and to do it now. Do it and give the efforts the backing that you will need to give........I know that won't be easy, but it's time to remove this headache from your life and we are all behind whatever way will do that in the long term.

In at least two languages that I know of (Hawaiian and American Sign Language), the words for "thank you" and "you're welcome" are the same. I like that.

We've talked before about the possibility of having "membership dues" for the 'Cat. For obvious reasons, nobody wants to limit the accessibility of this site to anyone. But what about setting up a "silent membership", where we could contribute on a regular basis with no special recognition and no extra privileges...except the warm fuzzy feeling that 'Spaw seems to get most reliably from urinary incontinence.

At the last Hawaii Public Radio pledge drive, they started a new program of "perpetual membership". Every month a small donation to HPR is charged to your credit card...and it doesn't expire until you say so. I know that many 'Catters make their living from music and crafts and other sources that are not exactly fountains of cash. But some of us are fortunate enough to have fairly good "day jobs". If there were a way to arrange a regular monthly or quarterly CC payment to the 'Cat, I'd sign up, gladly. Personally, I would prefer doing it that way, rather than adding to the list of bills I have to remember to pay, or waiting for Max to make a very difficult appeal. No hassles, and no guilt! It should be possible, yes?

Aloha,
Mark

Some of us in the UK are trying to put together a scheme to provide the Mudcat with regular income without being ripped off by the banks on charges.

At this stage it is discussion only - but if any Uk or Eire catters would like to PM me with thier E Mail addresses I can put them in receipt of a discussion paper in Word format.

The key is bulking up small but regular payments by Standing Order.

The thing about writing grants is that you have to sell your grant-maker on what you're asking them to fund. You have to know the organization inside and out, so I will be the first to say that I couldn't write grants for Mudcat. At least, not with as little as I know about it. What I did for the library several years ago was to create a catalog of organizations that fund libraries. It took a while, and is in a large (one of those 5" ones) 3-ring binder. I found everything I could on each organization itself, who it's officers are, then called, emailed, wrote for, or downloaded their applications and information about who they have previously given money to. Now when the director or associate directors start looking for dollars for specific projects, out comes my catalog and they find likely sources. (It took several months to complete, in with my main job of writing various library publications). I check out those organizations to see if everything is still up-to-date, and periodically I look around to see who can be added, who must be deleted. (Reminds me that it's time to update it again. . . ).

Spaw, it doesn't bother me when anyone sounds like my Dad, he's a great man whom I love and always makes good sense without judgement.

I am currently working on a presentation to a folk song society who seems willing to help us financially. We have a meeting with them in mid-February in which the report will be presented. I intend to make this report available for download on the Mudcat. It should provide a significant percentage of the information necessary to at least get consideration from other sources. Any help in finding sources of income other than personal contributions would certainly be appreciated.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather the Library of Congress fund us than to take your money. How is what we're doing now different from what John and Alan Lomax did then? Seems to be a bit of an oxymoron to take the money of the people I'm doing this with and for.

Max, you aren't really "taking" from us, though, you are giving...so it makes perfect sense, to me, that we help pay for the "gas, tires, magnetic tape, etc." that the Lomaxes used.:-) The big thing is that you have allowed us to be a big part of the *collecting* and creating of what Mudcat has become and that is worth whatever we can contribute, IMO.

Well, what's different is Mudcat doesn't take the contributions of singers and musicians and squirrel 90% of the stuff away in a national attic where only DC'ers can get at it. I love what the LoC has done and continues to try to do but it has done a thoroughly crappy job of being a real national resource.

This glorious Mudcat, and some similar specialty sites, is making music and information available to the people without costing them a fortune in phone tag, postage, fees, time and travel, or without turning them off or turning them down completely. The 'folk' finally have a way to share freely, independent of time and geography.

Won't grant money wind up hemming in and closing down the process like it has for many institutions--I can see the correctness police moving in now--you can't say that, you can't think that, you can't hire him. Keeping all the money and power with 'the folk' would be better than scoring grants that come with strings.

That said, it's Max's site, so whatever he wants to do is extra cool with me!

Slight thread creep from one of those lucky DCers who gets to use the Library of Congress. First point: they don't give grants, so we need to help Max look elsewhere for support.

Second point, to Patty: Do a little digging. The resource is getting more and more national all the time. Check out the American Folklife Center's website at www.loc.gov/folklife

Many of the collections are available online now -- manuscripts, photographs, even whole collections of thematic material. It's not everything, but it's more than any one human being I know can get through. Tremendous stuff there. Try the American Memory project. Try Local Legacies. Try the wonderful folklife curriculum materials that have been developed as part of the Montana Heritage project. Great, useful stuff.

The Folklife Reading Room, which houses the physical collections, has a staffed reference desk which is available to answer questions from the public. Call (202)707-5510. They're helpful and knowledgeable folk -- no voicemail here.

Lest you think I'm a staff member of the Library paid to write nice stuff about them, my only involvement with the LoC and the Folklife Center is a great admiration for and interest in its collections -- and the people who care for them.

And finally, thank you and you're welcome to Max, for all you do and for all the reasons everyone has said. Kathy

Max, Belated "you're welcome" from sporadic news-reader and TIA for the **years** of pleasure I can already tell the 'Cat will provide me!! Oh, yeah - stay away from dark wool suits in resale shops.

Gosh, I missed that last post from Max. Rather take money from the Library Of Congress than us ?? I assume the Library is a Federal institution. I would rather cut off my left nut than take money from the government. 'Round these here parts, if you take money from the government, they own a piece of you, and they try to tell you what to do and what not to do. Better to have one nut than none.
