12 Jan 02 - 11:07 AM (#626578) Subject: RE: Tune Req: march of the siamese children From: masato sakurai As for the musical "King and I," I came across this article The King and I: Fact or Fiction?:
Anna Leonowens is known throughout the world as the governess in the Court of Siam (now known as Thailand) due to the popularity of the musical and movie "The King and I". Many people believed that they were watching a true story, not only regarding the antics of the king but also the importance of Anna in the court. The film, starring Yul Brynner, so insulted the Thai people, that it was banned from being shown in Thailand on grounds of historical and cultural distortions. Now, a remake of the movie has been made by 20th Century Fox called "Anna and the King". Can Hollywood make amends for past misdeeds or will history repeat itself? ~Masato

"don't mention "The King & I" as the Thai people feel that it was disrespectful towrds their king... and so they do not like it".... good tune...... but maybe not appropriate slainte alison |

12 Jan 02 - 10:24 PM (#626866) Subject: RE: Tune Req: march of the siamese children From: M.Ted The melody, as charming as it is, was written by Richard Rodgers, and is not a Thai melody, and probably would not mean a whole lot to Thai audiences, with exception of the ones who were familiar with the show-- I have an arrangement of the a Siamese march that apparently was used in the real king's court, for the entrance of his children--however, the arrangement is for two classical guitars, and, given that it is based on a piece from the last century, may not mean a lot to Thai listeners--PM me if you are interested-- Sorry, I am on the wrong track--you're post is a bit unclear, and I thought your band was going to Thailand--apparently it is the scouts who are going to Thailand--in that case, get your e-mail address to me, and I can send a PDF of the fake sheet, dots and chords in the Key of F--
