12 Jan 02 - 09:25 PM (#626835) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: Amos Hey, it sounds pretty good -- but the guy was obviously a bass player not a banjo player! |
12 Jan 02 - 11:29 PM (#626894) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: catspaw49 I thought the sound was pretty decent too, but the intonation left something to be desired. Spaw |
13 Jan 02 - 02:35 AM (#626935) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: GUEST,MandolinPlayer Y'know I hafta admit, even though the banjo is the natural enemy of the mandolin family, the thing did sound good. When I first saw it, I thought it was some sort of totemic or phallic symbol for banjo players...as if playing loudly and out of tune weren't enough, you know... |

13 Jan 02 - 04:30 AM (#626951) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: Cappuccino I think, Kat, you have the answer. They've been mixing a little * too * freely... ! - Ian B |

13 Jan 02 - 05:03 AM (#626958) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: Mark Cohen The obvious question is, "Why?" And the obvious answer, I suppose is, "Because they could." I must say, though, when I saw the bit about "Shipped with neck unattached. Bolts together easily", the name "Frankenstein" did come to mind... Aloha, Mark |

13 Jan 02 - 02:37 PM (#627201) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: Little Hawk Grotesque and horrifying. They could've used it for the "SIZE DOES MATTER" ads for that wretched Godzilla movie a few years back... I wonder who will be the lucky sucker who buys the thing and gets to haul it around with him to the folk festivals? - LH |

13 Jan 02 - 07:04 PM (#627299) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: Mark Cohen Hey, and it's on sale for $1,000 off! I think they missed the boat, though, by not putting an extra tuning peg on the side of the fretboard. Otherwise, how do you know it's not a bass drum with too much Viagra? Aloha, Mark |
14 Jan 02 - 01:10 AM (#627444) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: Les B I remember seeing a photo from the 1930's of the famous Pop Stoneman family band all lined up on the porch of their house with their instruments. One of the kids was standing on a chair, playing a bass similar to the one under discussion. The Stoneman instrument was obviously made from an old bass drum, and what stuck in my memory was that they called it "whumper"! So there's not much new under the sun, just re-invented every half century or so. |

14 Jan 02 - 12:24 PM (#627692) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: SharonA LOL! Oh, gawd, this brings back memories. One of my ex-boyfriends built a really, really ugly version of this instrument out of a homemade neck and a blue bass drum with a bumper sticker on the front. That thing was constantly out of tune! He would indeed carry his monstrosity to jams, festivals and even a guitar show, and it never failed to draw attention. Not praise, necessarily, but attention! It took up most of his car (drum in the back seat, neck protruding between the front seats) so, when the weather permitted – and sometimes even in the rain – the "instrument" rode on the car's roof rack. I wonder how many accidents were caused by people staring at his car? When he moved across the country, he packed up his car to make the drive "Grapes of Wrath" style (with the passenger compartment filled to the ceiling, and a fiberglas sailboat on top of the other stuff on the roof). There was no room for the banjo, so he took the neck off to take along with him and discarded the drum. He tells me that he's found another drum to attach the neck to. God help all of you in California. Thanks loads, Mandolin Player, for bringing that back to me. My therapist thanks you, too. *BG* Sharon |

14 Jan 02 - 07:58 PM (#628013) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: Jim Dixon I saw a bass banjo (but not that big) at Music Folk in St. Louis a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any reference to it on their website. They also had ukelele-size banjos. |
14 Jan 02 - 08:34 PM (#628032) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: Rolfyboy6 Looks good for trios with tuba and accordian. Surefire crowd pleaser. You could make one with a large bodhran for Celtic music. Needs the fifth string tho'if it's goning to have that Low lonesome Sound. |
15 Jan 02 - 06:31 PM (#628628) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: JedMarum right on, Mark! My first thought too, was "Why?" LOL - but then of course, I hafta admit, I'd love to play with it for a while! For a 'gear head' like me, even this monster has some appeal. It must be more of a lark then anything else, though. The sound while OK, is nothing to write home about. The scale seems a bit shorter then the full sized upright - and the string bass has such a wonderful sound, I don;t think this thing will ever give it competition. Fun stuff, though; eh? |

16 Jan 02 - 10:56 PM (#629431) Subject: RE: BS: Why You Wouldn't Run Screaming From: Little Hawk Well said, Jim! LOL! Oh, Gawd...I just looked at the beast again, and all I can say is, I suspect that even Cheech Wizard without the hat would be more appealing... Well, maybe not. We could all chip in and buy it for Spaw, since it appears to be in proportion with his fabled you-know-what, but who's got that kind of money to blow on major delusions of bodily endowment these days? Well, it was a nice thought, anyway. :-) - LH |
