I have seen many, many performances by many "name" singer-songwriters, and while I enjoy their performances well enough and will continue to support travelling musicians, there is nobody around today writing memorable songs with memorable melodies in the same way that Paxton, Simon et al did. Based on your post, if you aren't listening to them I think you will enjoy them. Also Shawn Mullins kindof falls in that group. JohnL: Having gotten into playing acoustic blues over the last couple of years, I have been real impressed with Eric Bibb, Alvin Youngblood Hart and especially Corey Harris. I say Corey three years ago at Wolftrap Farms in Virginia and he did an amazing acoustic set which lasted well over an hour. Then I went to see the guy again and he brought his band and the music suffered. Do you know if he's still playing with the band? |

Maybe he doesn't spring to mind here 'cause his renown is from others doing his songs. Murray, I too love Jack Williams. I'm a latecomer to this amazing musician -- only found out about him a few years ago because he shares a label with Small Potatos. I can't think of a man whose music moves me any more than Chris Smither -- the multiple mention here is well deserved. |

From reading all these posts there seems to be a lot of Steve Earle fans in Catsburg. I saw him about 6 years ago when he was still doing "whatever" he was doing. Then I read somewhere that he quit doing "whatever", gained 50 pounds and has been trying to get back into the music scene. I'm not that familiar with his recent stuff so if there's anyone out there that is more up to date on the guy, I'd be curious to hear what's up with him. |

I don't mean to slight any of the other artists mentioned here, many of whom I deeply respect. But to my ear, Miss Welch is a cut above, as both a singer and songwriter. I think she has internalized the key elements of traditional folk music, yet put her own contemporary mark on it. Her influences are clearly audible, yet she has found her own way. Her voice and intonation perfectly fit the styles she sings, and her guitar & banjo work (along with that of her accompaniest David Rawlings) are also of note. I believe her music will be looked back on as some of the best from this era. |
