16 Jan 02 - 01:57 AM (#628841) Subject: Have You Heard Thom Bresh? From: Ebbie Every year the local Peace Officers Assoc. brings entertainers/musicians to town. I always buy one ticket, for the cause, but usually give the ticket away. Once in awhile I keep it for myself. I'm trying to decide which way to go this year. This year, in May, the guest will be Thom Bresh. I'm aware he is Merle Travis' son and that he has his own guitar picking style. I checked his website and he sounds like he'd be good on a number of different levels. But- is he LOUD? I cannot stand decibels crashing through the stratosphere. 'Shenandoah' will be on the same bill. Meant to check them out but forgot. Do you know anything about them? Thank 'ee kindly. Ebbie |

From: GUEST,Arkie Thom Bresh is is not only a great guitar player but an extraordinary entertainer and fine singer who has also written some good songs. One particular gift is his ability to impersonate other performers and the humor with which he presents the impersonations. I've booked Thom quite a few times and have never felt that he was too loud nor have I seen a disappointed audience. I too prefer a more comfortable sound level so I can appreciate your concern. Do not miss the opportunity to catch Thom in action. |

Driving distance, perhaps, but not drivable. There is no road to Juneau. However, we do have a marine highway, so you can drive or walk onto a ferry at Bellingham, Washington, or Prince Rupert, BC or alternatively coming from the Alaska Highway, at Skagway or Haines, Alaska. One reason I'm interesting in going is that I have a guitar that Merle Travis played- and liked. Travis was the Alaska Folk Festival guest artist in the early 70s. Before my time but Jamo Jamison, first owner of my Martin, has a picture of Travis playing it. Juneau is small- about 30000 people- and Centennial Hall holds only about 1200, so it's usually possible to chat with entertainers after a concert, and I'll try. And if the musician has time in his schedule there is usually a house party/jam after the concert. Get to meet a lot of people that way. Did I mention that Juneau is special? :) Thanks, guys. |

From: Ebbie A couple of months ago I started a thread on the upcoming concert where Thom Bresh, son of Merle Travis, was opening. After doing some reading about all the drums and things I decided I didn't want to see Shenandoah. So I gave my ticket to a musician friend, Buddy Tabor, as it happens, who took along another friend. He said that Bresh is a wonderful guitarist but has the same tired old patter that it seems everyone expects in the lower 48- here we mostly resent it. Also both his and the main set were pumped up so loud it distorted the sound. My friends stayed for the Bresh set but after one tune by Shenandoah left the hall. Buddy Tabor would like to book Bresh up here for an acoustic concert- he feels that the current setup does not present him properly. |

In past years he has played acoustic guitars and has also run his guitar through the house system. He is an exceptional guitarist and, in my opinion, the acoustic situation fits him best. He has apparently played a lot of clubs and does have a few stock lines he throws out. I am not really impressed by them either. He is pretty gifted at imitations and many are quite humerous. If one could get him started on that it could be entertaining. He hosted a TV show in Canada some time back which was more of the country variety type. |

He did a fine show, and I bought two CDs of his. He even did his own selling and had time to chat with everybody. Very personable guy. Very talented too. Good voice, and his thumb picking was fantastic. I bought the one CD for that reason. Only one vocal song on there (Guitar Boy, written about his Dad) and the rest are instrumental. I'm looking forward to hearing them. John Anderson was the headliner for the show- I'd have put it the other way 'round, but maybe that's just me. Bresh's set was loud -I loved his 'choked' bass - but not hurtful. When Anderson's turn came after the intermission, they had cranked up the sound so much that I really couldn't hear the words. I left before the end of his set. I'm sure he was fine but his voice and guitar were not exceptional; if he'd been in my living room I would have stayed but this way I got a little bored, plus as I said, it was too loud. He has a habit of cutting off his voice in the middle of a word; he reminded me some of Merle Haggard so it was fine but not enough to keep me there. But I'm glad I got to hear Thom Bresh. |
