DONEGAL DANNY

I remember the night that he came in. The wind breathed cold and damp.
A giant of a man in an oilskin coat and a bundle that told he was a tramp.
He stood at the bar and he called for a pint, and he turned and gazed at the fire.
“On a night like this, to be safe and dry is me one and only desire.

CHORUS: “So here's to those that are dead, dead and gone, the friends that I loved dear.
And here's to you, and I bid you adieu, saying Donegal Danny's been here,
Me boys, Donegal Danny's been here.”

(2) Well, it's then in a voice that's hushed and low, he said, “Listen, and I'll tell you a tale,
How a man of the sea became a man of the roads, and never more will set sail.
I've fished out of Howth and Kerry Beggs, Ardnath and Baltimore,
But the cruel sea has beaten me, and I'll end me days on the shore.

(3) “One fateful night in the wind and the rain, we set sail from Kerry Beggs town.
There were five of us from sweet Donegal, and a man from county Down.
We were fishermen who worked the sea and we never counted the cost,
But I never thought ere that night was done, that all me friends would be lost.

(4) “Then the storm broke and it drove our boat to the rocks about 12 miles from shore,
And we often sighed as we fought the tide to see our homes once more,
But the ship struck a rock and we hoved the bow and we all knew that she would go down,
So we jumped into the icy sea and prayed God we wouldn't drown,
But the ragin' sea was rising still and we struck out for the land,
And she fought with all her cruelty to claim our gallant band.
Well, by St. John's Point in the early dawn I dragged myself on shore,
And I cursed the sea for what she'd done and I vowed I'd sail her nevermore.

(5) “Now it's ever since that night I've been on the road, traveling and trying to forget
That awful night I lost me friends. Why, I see their faces yet.
And still at night when the sea runs high and rain is tearing at my skin,
Why, I hear the cries of drowning men come floating over the wind.”

"Donegal Danny" has been recorded by many Irish artists, including many balladeers from that beautiful county, such as Margo and John Kerr. Here are the words:

I remember the night that he came in from the wintry cold and damp,
A giant of a man in an oilskin coat and a bundle that told he was a tramp.
He stood at the bar and called a pint, then turned and gazed at the fire.
“On the night like this to be safe and dry is my one and only desire.”

(Chorus:) So here's to those who are dead and gone, the friends I love so dear.
And here's to you, as I bid you adieu, say Donegal Danny's been here, me boys,
Donegal Danny's been here.

Then in a voice that was hushed and low he said, “Listen and I'll tell you all a tale:
How a man of the sea became a man of the road and vowed to nevermore set sail.
I fished out of Ards and Killybegs, Ardglass and Baltimore,
But the cruel sea has beaten me and I'll end my days on the shore.
That fateful night in the wind and rain we set sail from Killybegs town.
There was five of us from Donegal and one from County Down.
We were fishermen who worked the sea and never counted the cost,
But I never thought ere that night was o'er that my five friends would all be lost. (Chorus)

Then the sea had broke and it drove the boat on the rocks about ten miles from shore,
But we fought the tide and hoped inside we'd see our homes once more.
Then we struck a rock and holed the bow and all of us knew that she'd go down.
We jumped right into the icy sea and prayed to God we wouldn't drown.
Ever since that night I've been on the road, travelling and trying to forget
That awful night I lost all my friends. I see their faces yet.
And often at night when the wind is high and the rain is tearing at my skin,
I hear the cries of drowning men floating over on the wind. (Chorus)

Hi Alison!

Did a gig at a yacht club last Saturday and someone asked me to sing this one. I was amused because I'm leaving for Donegal next Sunday. How did he know that?

My friend "Banjo" Burke, a great tenor who also plays the tenor banjo sings this one. I can almost hear him singing it... almost! If I knew the melody better, I'd give you the chords right now! It's in a straight major scale so 3 or 4 chords should be fine.

All the best and good luck on Wednesday!

The Dubliners do a nice version of this song. I have it on a Greatest Hits CD of theirs. I like it for it's vividness, and it is a timeless story of the perils of the sea. And I love the singer with the gravelly voice. What was his name? And is he deceased as I have heard?

G'day all,

A friend was after the words and tune to Donegal Danny - and I said I would check the DT for him. Well, there was a good set of words posted Oct '97 by TK (Terry K?) ... but no tune. I looked at Alan of Oz's tune site but to no avail.

Could some keen 'Catter point me to a set of dots? ... Or a MIDI ... I'd even settle for translating an ABC! (My friend is decidedly even less 'computate' than me, so there is no point in steering him towards resource sites.

Thanks in advance,

G'day again,

Don Meixner: Thanks for the reply. The (probable) credits will help track it down ... but may not find published music. My friend is a classically trained violinist and so he wants traditional notation. The chords will be good if he switches to another of the instruments he plays less often ... tenor banjo or mandolin ... but not guitar.

I have already given him the words from the DT ... but I will compare for any nice differences in your set! I don't know how well he remembers the tune, which was sung by a mutual friend ... who worked for a short time with blue asbestos in a British naval dockyard - before migrating to Australia ... and who died a year or two back from mesothelioma!

Musicman: Thanks for your offer. A recording or (even better for extracting 'dots') a MIDI would be very handy. I would like to see the tune added to Alan (of Oz)'s Mudcat Music Page ... along with all the Australian song tunes I owe him! If I get something that suits, I will pass it on so that all 'Catters have access to it.

If you have a reasonably compact digital file of the song, will PM an e-mail address suitable to receive it.

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Not traditional, pretty recent composition credited to Phil Coulter / Bill Martin (though some places just give Coulter's name.)

e.g. on The Best of the Dubliners, 1974 (probably produced by Phil Coulter, too).

Donegal Danny first appeared on The Dubliners album Plain and Simple in 1973, which was produced by Phil Coulter. It is the same album on which "The Town I Loved So Well" first appeared. Phil Coulter and Bill Martin had a publishing partnership which led to each being co-credited for the others songs, even though they often wrote separately, a bit like lennon and mccartney i suppose.

I don't know about : "Then the storm it broke and broke the boat
With the rocks about ten miles from shore;" listened again and changed to and drove the boat To the rocks -Joe-

I've got a printed set of lyrics on liner notes from Arranmore's "Island Home", a few differences. The above reads "Well the storm it broke and it drove our boat onto the rocks ten miles from shore".

Also credits the song to S. McCarthy (Sean?). All the other songs on this liner seem carefully credited, so I don't think they pulled this out of the air. Their guy George Stevens learned it from Gerry Timlin who apparently came out of Northern Ireland.

And the locales were a bit different, uses "St. James Point" instead of St. John's, and "I've fished at the Point and at Killybegs, from Bundoran to the isle of Arranmore".    Also some slightly different phrasing, but I guess none of this is germane if you think it's still a Coulter/Martin production.
