Hi Alison!

Did a gig at a yacht club last Saturday and someone asked me to sing this one. I was amused because I'm leaving for Donegal next Sunday. How did he know that?

My friend "Banjo" Burke, a great tenor who also plays the tenor banjo sings this one. I can almost hear him singing it... almost! If I knew the melody better, I'd give you the chords right now! It's in a straight major scale so 3 or 4 chords should be fine.

The Dubliners do a nice version of this song. I have it on a Greatest Hits CD of theirs. I like it for it's vividness, and it is a timeless story of the perils of the sea. And I love the singer with the gravelly voice. What was his name? And is he deceased as I have heard?

A friend was after the words and tune to Donegal Danny - and I said I would check the DT for him. Well, there was a good set of words posted Oct '97 by TK (Terry K?) ... but no tune. I looked at Alan of Oz's tune site but to no avail.

Could some keen 'Catter point me to a set of dots? ... Or a MIDI ... I'd even settle for translating an ABC! (My friend is decidedly even less 'computate' than me, so there is no point in steering him towards resource sites.

Don Meixner: Thanks for the reply. The (probable) credits will help track it down ... but may not find published music. My friend is a classically trained violinist and so he wants traditional notation. The chords will be good if he switches to another of the instruments he plays less often ... tenor banjo or mandolin ... but not guitar.

I have already given him the words from the DT ... but I will compare for any nice differences in your set! I don't know how well he remembers the tune, which was sung by a mutual friend ... who worked for a short time with blue asbestos in a British naval dockyard - before migrating to Australia ... and who died a year or two back from mesothelioma!

Musicman: Thanks for your offer. A recording or (even better for extracting 'dots') a MIDI would be very handy. I would like to see the tune added to Alan (of Oz)'s Mudcat Music Page ... along with all the Australian song tunes I owe him! If I get something that suits, I will pass it on so that all 'Catters have access to it.

Donegal Danny first appeared on The Dubliners album Plain and Simple in 1973, which was produced by Phil Coulter. It is the same album on which "The Town I Loved So Well" first appeared. Phil Coulter and Bill Martin had a publishing partnership which led to each being co-credited for the others songs, even though they often wrote separately, a bit like lennon and mccartney i suppose.

I don't know about : "Then the storm it broke and broke the boat
With the rocks about ten miles from shore;" listened again and changed to and drove the boat To the rocks -Joe-

I've got a printed set of lyrics on liner notes from Arranmore's "Island Home", a few differences. The above reads "Well the storm it broke and it drove our boat onto the rocks ten miles from shore".   

Also credits the song to S. McCarthy (Sean?). All the other songs on this liner seem carefully credited, so I don't think they pulled this out of the air. Their guy George Stevens learned it from Gerry Timlin who apparently came out of Northern Ireland.

And the locales were a bit different, uses "St. James Point" instead of St. John's, and "I've fished at the Point and at Killybegs, from Bundoran to the isle of Arranmore".    Also some slightly different phrasing, but I guess none of this is germane if you think it's still a Coulter/Martin production.
