Total BS; Who sang this pop tune?

You know the one I mean, I heard it again on someone's car radio and it's driving me nuts.

It's the one that goes:

Na na NAH-nah, Na na NAH-nah, hey, hey, hey, Good-byeee.

I know this isn't strictly Mudcat material, but I would reckon that everybody in the Western Hemisphere has heard this song.

WHO SANG IT? And when? And, for that matter, what was the song called ?

Murray

Thank you Sean. As it says on your linked page, it is one of the world's most heard songs. (Or the chorus is) I am, however, amazed that I have absolurely no recollection of a band called "Steam"

Ranked the #1 song in the counrty for 2 weeks in Novemebr, 1969, and in the Top 40 for 13 weeks, it was good example of one-hit-wonder bands.

If you've watched American televised sporting events, you've likely heard it. If you've watched Amercian television advertising, you've likely heard it.

If you've listened to any "oldies" American radio station, you've likely heard it.

I sincerely hope (for their own sanity) that this is not the case in other countries. I'm not certain, but I think that this song might explain some of the more aberrant behavior of Americans in the last few decades. I almost have the Bay of Pigs fiasco linked to it...

Yes, it does. Just like the Northern Hemisphere starts at the Equator.

Steam was never a real band. It seems that some guy had recorded a bunch of songs under his real name (I forget what is was), and needed one more tune to make a complete album. NaNa Hey Hey was picked, and was supposed to be the worst song on the album. Seems that DJ's liked the song, and it became the hit. The performer was so embarrassed that he invented the name Steam, rather that have his real name associated with it. I got this info from a series of books called Uncle John's Bathroom Readers. A highly recommended set of books for you trivia fans.

The person who put "Steam" together was one Paul Leka--for those who care, however, the aggregation were not "one hit wonders"--they had a follow-up,"I've Gotta Make You Love Me"(as opposed to "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me") that stayed on the HOT 100 for nearly two months--

Murray;

That could be why it's difficult. Though I do think I have a line on the autobiography of an eyewitness who claims that John Wilkes Booth's last lines at the Ford Theatre were "Hey hey..."

It's a horrible, dreadful song, and while I haven't the least idea of who the perpetrator(s) might have been, I curse you for having planted it in my head.

Well, you never know, Misophist, you might turn out to be one of the many who likes it---

Oh, please don't get it confused with "Naa, Na-Na-Na-Naa, Na-Na-Na Naa Nana Naa Nana Naaa"---

Not to be confused, either, with "Na-na-na-naaa: na-naaa-na-na-na; na-na-na-naaa:naa-na-na-na; Na-na-na-naaa:na-naaa-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na" sung, I think, by the Muppets.

Also not to be confused with "Nah, Nah, Nah,, nanana Nah, nanana Nah Hey ????"

RangerSteve, cheers on the Uncle John's Readers....another great one is called 'Seattle Grafitti'...classic.

You know who else sang this one? I have vague memories, nightmares really, of that chunk in the eighties where every film star thought he could sing (Eddie Murphy--eeek)? The worst rendition of the NahNahHeyHeyGoodbye song....drum roll...Bruce Willis.

No, no, no... the Muppets did Ma na ma na, boop boop bedooboop, Na-na-na-naaa: na-naaa-na-na-na; na-na-na-naaa:naa-na-na-na was completely different....

And who could remember Bad Manner's Buster Bloodvessel with 'Nee nee nah nah noh noh noo noo!'.

And The Charms Sang: "no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no, no,no,no,no,no,no your daddy knows, I thought you knew, Hearts Made of Stone. Some started another thread about what makes a hit song. I guess we know, know, know, know, know, know, know, know, know, now.

And don't forget the "nobody can do the filly, like I do, nobody can do the _____ like I do, etc." with it's immortal "no no no nono no no no no no...." chorus!

Tragically, I can't name the "artist"!

Jerry, you got the right number of"no"s for "Hearts of Stone--you get the Sid Nathan Award for keeping R & B flame burning--I'll bet you know what WPLJ stands for!

Everybody else, I think we all are talking about the same song, "Land of a Thousand Dances", which was a hit for Chris Kenner, Cannibal and the Headhunters, Wilson Pickett, the J. Geils Band and somebody else I can't remember--pretty important song--

and Jonathan Winters said, "Ney noo NAH ne no ney"...sort of...which makes as much sense... and any of the above!

(If I ever DID hear anything like that, my brain had orders to NOT process it to memory cells)
