Yet Another Way to Consistently Donate

If you don't like to use PayPal, or haven't set up a small bit to be paid out of your bank account, or if for any other reason you are still looking at how to set up a small monthly contribution OR a quick way to pay for those auction purchases, take a look at this: USPostalService Online Payment Service.

I don't know if it will work anyone outside the US and Max will have to sign up, too, if there is any interest in anyone using this. Thought it was worth pointing out, though.

Thanks,

kat

Thanks, Roope, the book has stalled due to our moving to Colorado in the next few weeks! (See the Colorado or Bust thread!)

To get the addy and all other pertinent info just click on the fish which is jumping out of the banjo, the Mudcat logo, which is at the top of the Forum page. It says "Support the Mudcat." When you get there, scroll down and you'll see the addy, etc.

Thank you!!

Hey Kat -- on the information on that page, Max says he can't afford to get the tax exempt status for Mudcat, so donations and contributions aren't tax exempt. Is that still accurate? If so, what would it cost to do this? Do you know? Maybe some of us could go together and pay for this?

Wyo, I don't know US (or even UK) law but have tried to search and details appear to be here

At first glance, it looks to me like the costs would be those of preparing accounts, etc rather than a direct cost for exemption status.

I got pretty good at non-profit cash-basis bookkeeping in Red Cross, and doing grant budgets. I could probably set up a chart of accounts if that's needed.

As I understand it, the biggest problem with making Mudcat tax-exempt is that we're not big enough to justify the effort involved in getting tax-exempt status - and maintaining that status would be quite a headache. Mudcat operates on a shoestring - maybe five thousand dollars a year. Getting tax-exempt status is just not worth the bother.

I belong to an arts group of about 60 members that has tax-exempt status and a budget in the hundreds, not thousands. It cost nothing to do this except time. Didn't do it myself, but my understanding is that it took a lot of time for all the paperwork, but no money.

There are still forms to fill out each year, non-taxes to non-declare, and so forth. Max would have to decide if he is an employee, etc. Lot of issues to work out, not hard ones but they do affect the details of record-keeping and there are penalties when you miss deadlines. Then there are the acknowledgments of donations to get out on a regular basis-- when they go over a certain amount, a specific acknowledgement must be sent (legally). There is also the sticky wicket of "value received" for the donations-- it could be reasonably argued that the service we receive is a value, separate from the educational activity it amounts to as a resource. Also Max would have to produce an annual report, and although these can be simple, it is one more thing to do on a list of someone who already has more than enough to do.

A lot of grants depend on pre-existing non-profit status, except fellowships, outright awards of recognition, etc. But then no one is breaking down my door with sources they have found for grants to non-profits lke Mudcat. *G*

In other words, this should be up to Max, completely. We can offer specific helps here, and I think that is a good thing, but let's not cast them in terms of "oughts." Because we don't know (and don't need to know) the details of what Max has in front of him at any given moment. For me, it's enough that Mudcat is HERE, and that when Max and/or Mudcat need help-- and we can-- we do.
