Found an album, I think; Michael Marra (artist), no picture (album title), see here, about half way down.

TAKE ME OUT DRINKING TONIGHT

When these shoes were new
It was 'How do you do'
It was whisky and telling of tales
And when my shirt was clean
I was there to be seen
I had clear eyes and my smile never failed

All of my brothers that I met on the way
They were drinking by night,
They were drinking by day
I'll restore to my eyes
What was clear and was right
Honey take me out drinking tonight
Oh, take me out drinking tonight

Bluebells on matches
And stains on the table
Oh the sweet smell of the luscious woodbine
Oh Mr MacEwan
You will be my ruin
Oh I see it but I really don't mind

All of my brothers that I met on the way
The were drinking by night
They were drinking by day
I'll restore to my eyes
What was clear and was right
Oh honey take me out drinking tonight
Oh take me out drinking tonight

Now I'm still smiling through
Though there's stains on my shoes
The right it is heavy and the left it is right
If it's left up to you
Then I know what we'll do
Oh honey take me out drinking tonight
Oh take me out drinking tonight
Oh honey take me out drinking tonight

As sung by Hadden Rothfield and Carr on the album "When These Shoes Were New"

Jack

Another version is by Aileen Carr on 'Green Yarrow' (2000).

anyone got any chords? I especially love the Isaac Guillory version - just magic.

I saw Isaac play this a couple of times. I started working it out at one point but never did the whole song. Isaac did it in E, the start goes between E and an A shape in the E position. You should be able to work it out as the basic tune is strait forward, three chord trick I think from memory

It's E-A-C#m-B for the verse, and E-A-E-B-E-B-E for the chorus.

The Isaac Guillory version which is the one i'm familiar with has a few more bells & whistles but you can do with it what you will.

The writer is credited as "M.Marra" whom i have never heard of.

I see this thread hasn't been active for a while but hopefully someone finds it useful.

That would be Michael Marra.

There's a video of himself singing TAKE ME OUT DRINKING TONIGHT at YouTube.

If you've never heard of Michael Marra, check out his website - one of the best you'll ever find for this totally unique and idiosyncratic performer. He did a great night at Celtic Connections in Glasgow last week, in fine form!

Oops just retrieved cookie!
And another fine version by Annie Grace (ex Iron Horse) on her solo CD of the same name.

Definitely written by Michael Marra, appeared on his first album circa 1980

I think the line is ....
"The right it is heavy, the left it is light"
i.e. referring to the type of beer spilled on each of his shoes.
