Recently it has come to be a proof reader or 'Beta reader' of stories, articles etc online. I presume you weren't referring to the old video recording system BETA versus VHS? Nor the second letter of the Greek alphabet?

27 Jan 02 - 04:22 PM (#636753) Subject: RE: BETA!! Whit is it? From: Amos It's a term used for a software release that has been through internal testing, but has not been chewed on by users yet. So they send it 'round to a bunch of "beta testers" who work it over and report where bugs are found. It is the second letter of the Greek alphabet -- the in-house testiung is done by "alpha" testers. Anyway, it is understood that softweare in beta testing phase is likely to be buggy and not to be completely trusted.
