The Rams are Jingoists? I doubt that the Patriots will be able to handle them, but, what the heck, who'd a-thunk they'd even get the chance to try? Fall River ain't that far behind you, is it, Jed? When do you transfer your loyalty to Dallas?

Sorry, I didn't mean to refer to the Rams as jingoists. I was really just being a smartass and using the word patriot in a different context.

Truth be told, I have yet to watch a single Super Bowl game and I'm trying to maintain my perfect record. I confess that one year, I forget which, I slipped up and somehow became aware of the teams that were slated to compete. That year was a close call. Until Sandy mentioned the Rams, I had no idea who else might be on the field.

And, in the spirit of A. Conan Doyle (A Study In Scarlet) “...Now that I know it, I shall try to forget it.” <g>

Well, what with all the troops the British have been sending to Boston, it's looking grim, and given all the trouble in New York, they can't expect much help from the other colonies right now, and a lot of people are having their doubts about Washington as a commander anyway....

Oh, wait. You were talking about those New England Patriots. Haven't a bloody clue. Who they playin' again?

Well, they certainly are the Super Bowl underdogs, but I'd say there's a chance. Not quite an even chance, but a chance nonetheless.

After all, none of the (inane) sports commentators thought the Patriots would beat the Steelers. Around here (Philadelphia PA area), the sportscasters were bantering about a Pennsylvania Super Bowl – Philadelphia Eagles vs. Pittsburgh Steelers – and joking that Acting Governor Mark Schweiker would have to place a bet against himself, spend half the game cheering for one team and half for the other, and sprint across the field at halftime.

...and look what happened: both PA teams are out of it! (more's the pity *G*)

So I'll go out on a limb here and call it for the underdogs. Besides, since the Rams beat the Eagles, I'd like to see them go down (in flames, preferably).

Well I notice the 'Browns' didn't make it and I attribute this to the segregationist policy of separate but equal still alive in the NFL. Although they portray an attitude of equality, once again it becomes a matter of color! The Browns are given all the same things that others get but are in a separate category and banished to Cleveland. Cleveland is proud of it's Brown heritage, bu then again, it's Cleveland. The high rolling, carpetbagging, elitist class has left them to flounder while taking their money to places like Baltimore where the team is named for the visions of a white, albeit luny, poet.

True Patriots would stand beside the Brown team and endorse an Equal Opportunity Super Bowl and send the Browns in their place. Once again though, these Patriots are simply lip-service liberals who maintain their vested interests when they could be taking a huge step forward in uncivil football rights......especially when they don't really have a snowball's chance in hell.

LOL - when I started this thread (almost tongue in cheek) I knew I'd have a wide range of responses, ad sure enought I did!

No Sandy, I'm never too far from my Fall River roots. I played a show in Little Rock AR a couple of weeks back and two people from the audience (separately) came up to me and told me they were born in Fall River! LOL - so when the Patriots turned a few heads last week, with what everyone thought was a fluke victory - then shocked the world this week with a pretty impressive win over a darn good team; well I had to feel a twinge of pride for the old home team!

I've actually been reading lately, a bit of American Revolution era history and curious about music from the era (I love Dan Milner's version of SONS OF LIBERTY) so the title of the thread was meant to be a bit misleading.

Here's to the Pats, underdogs, they may be - they've doe well to get this far! Here's to those who'd rather be bicycling (I'm that way come Wimbldon) and here's to those who'd rather forget whose playing! I'm sure I'll enjoy the game with moderate interest, cheering on the old home team, and probably continuing progress in my John Adams biography during commercials and referee reviews!

Who says I can't multi-task!

LOL - Rick. You're right, the Patriots quarterback story is a pretty amazing one. When they had to send in Drew, who should be rusty, if not still recovering, I really thought the tide would turn, but low and behold, the Steelers had yet a new set of skills/problems to cope with, late in the game ... and they never could! Ol' Drew did a great job!

I was listening on the radio to the first half of the game because I played in Louisianna last weekend and was driving home during game time. It made the four drive fly pretty quick!

That reminds me. Yvette, the woman that owns/manages the club I played in Monroe LA this weekend told me a funny story.

The local powerhouse high school football team is the Monroe Rebels, and their school flag is the Stars and Bars. The school custom is for the mascot (a highly prized, sought after position) gets to run around the field with a huge school flag after the 'good guys' score. Yvette said she and a friend attended the game last Friday and after the first score her friend told her, "Now there's somethng you don't see everyday" pointing to the field. The school mascot was a young man of African American heritage, proudly waving his school banner around the stadium!

Who gives a flying shag about a bunch of overpaid guys whose sole reason for playing on a particular team is money? It's not as if professional sports teams actually in any way represent a particular area. They're (except by accident) not from there, and will sell their talents to the highest bidders. What do you expect Spaw, After all, The Patriots are from the home state of lip-service liberalism--Taxachusetts! :>)

(No, I'm not that dense, I get the parody... Hillarious stuff, Spaw!!!)

However, if the NFL were a truly civilized league, they'd make sure that the Eagles make the Super Bowl regularly due to their status as a protected species, as would the Buffalo Bills. The Redskins would make it to compensate for their years of betrayal at the hands of the so-called "Patriots". The Chiefs would get the occasional free pass for the same reason. The The Steelers would need to be given a free pass once every four years too--After all, most steel workers are union members, and you'd hate for them to switch their voter support from the NFL party to another one. The 49ers would never go--after all, why reward people who mine for gold and destroy mother earth? The Cowboys would stay home every year as well--Punishment for their abuse of those poor innocent bovines that they round up to be slaughtered.

I like the plan Loopy!! I think we could then do away with about half of the interminably long season along with a sizable number of teams. THEN we'd have a league that was once again small enough that only the very best would be playing. THEN we could impose some salary limits on it too. Give players a great retirement package and all, but cut the salaries from the ridiculous levels and then those who didn't want to play for say, $300,000 per year could sell Buicks instead.

I propose we adopt the same plan for baseball and basketball and if the hockey or soccer leagues go nuts, we'll sit on their asses too. This would make tickets affordable and nobody's season would overlap on both sides.

Glad I'm not king huh? I just get so disgusted with the whole thing though.................Sorry..Rant over.

Thread creep (no I don't mean you Spaw)

The greatest moment I've ever had in the NFL (well on TV anyway)

"The snow was coming down...BLANK lines up for the field goal......here's the kick...49 yards, and through the uprights. The GIANTS win!

I was a little kid, but that kicker became my hero. anybody know who it was?

Biggest disappointment....That little fucker Flutie really CAN'T pass over an NFL defensive line! (he was great in Toronto and Vancouver where the defensive lines are (on average) three inches shorter. Oh, he also had sure handed receivers on the teams he played for here...he didn't get a lot of help in San Diego...'specially from the running game. There...now I can never mention his name again as long as I live.

I like Flutie, Rick. He played in a league where he simply wasn't really big enough. He has contributed more to the first line of NFL QBs then most who do have the size and physical skills. It's true that he just cannot overcome his size to have had a long career, and the success he might otherwsie haev had - but he did much better then he should have been able to.

Spaw, I'm all for letting leagues tie their own ropes if they want to let salaries spiral out of control. But if owners are going to make big bucks selling advertising rights, luxury boxes, and team merchandise, I have no problem with players getting as big a slice of the pie as possible. Salaries will come down on their own in a hurry if people get fed up with paying $30 to park their car (da Bears), or $81.00 for a ticket (avg. price for a 'Skins ticket). They'll quit showing up, and the owners will cut costs to save their wallets. It hasn't happened yet, so more power to em' if they can find 80,000 people willing to turn over a Benjamin or two to enjoy a three hour footgall game eight Sundays a year.

But as long as Jim Carrey, Ah-nuld, Julia, and Jack can make $20 million for a few month's work memorizing and reciting some lines, I have no problem if someone wants to pay Barry Bonds that much for a 162 game season, or if they want to pay Peyton Manning $7 million to play 16 games of football a year. When people stop coming to the games, those athletes will learn to live on less, or they'll learn to live on a LOT less selling shoes rather than endorsing them.

You're right of course Loop and it's the owners, us, the whole damn system and it is what it is..........But every now and then around here I go off on these rants while dreaming of times past.

One of the nicer things is that I live close to a city with a minor league ball club and you can see a good game and have a fun night with the family and spend less than 50 bucks including gas, parking, food, and assorted ballpark junk. Additionally, there is someone who's giving away tickets for almost every game when a block is bought by some company. Last year we had free tickets to "Dime-A-Dog Night" and our two families went (4 adults, 4kids). We got there early and were able to upgrade to box seats, ate around 40 dogs, bought a couple of caps, bought drinks and some other munchies too, and went home after seeing a damn good ball game feeling great because the whole night for EIGHT people had cost about $65.00. Geeziz, I can't get a pair of decent Reds tickets for that.

It really was a classic game, even if our British friends can't figure out how a team can score that many goals in a football game. And Louie...my coconut-frond hat is off to you, my friend. Nailed down and preserved in cyberspace!

And Rick, if you stayed around for the saccharine post-game show, you'll know that it was Pat Summerall who kicked that field goal for the Giants. I missed that one...I was only -5 years old.

By the way, can anybody tell me if Bill Belichick is originally from Baltimore? I'm trying to check on my ear for accents.

Aloha,
Mark

Well hell done froze over because this one had all the classic makings of that Bengal-49er debacle and turned out to be maybe the best since the Jets and Colts!!!

And wherever Belichek is from, that cheap, money grubbing, contemptuous, jackass of a carpet bagging, sleazy, scrotum licking, asshole, Art Modell canned him when the Browns had him.

*sigh* I just don't get football. But I checked it at about 9:45 EST to see how they were doing. I was so confused that I shut the tv off when there was about 1 minute, 40 sec to go (in football time, that could take ages!). Score was tied, the Rams were jubilant- I figured it was all over.
Wish I'd stuck it out for a coupla more minutes!

My Bostonian sister-in-law sent me this little "true story." I thought y'all might enjoy it! ;-)

A first grade teacher in St. Louis explains to her class that she is a Rams fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if they, too, are Rams fans.

Everyone in the class raises their hand, except one little girl. The teacher looks at the girl with surprise and says, "Janie, why didn't you raise your hand?"

"Because I'm not a Rams fan," she replied.

The teacher, still shocked, asked, "Well, if you are not a Rams fan, then who are you a fan of?"

"I am a Pats fan, and proud of it," Janie replied.

The teacher could not believe her ears. "Janie, why are you a Pats fan?"

"Because my mom is a Pats fan, and my dad is a Pats fan, so I'm a Pats fan, too!"

"Well," said the teacher in an obviously annoyed tone, "that is no reason for you to be a Pats fan. You don't have to be just like your parents all of the time. What if your Mom was a moron and your dad was a moron, what would you be then?"

Janie grinned and said, "Then we'd be Rams fans!"

Nice goin', Louie Roy!

I didn't speculate as to the point spread, but I also called it for the Patriots to win, earlier on this thread. See post here

You may also recall that I predicted the Arizona Diamondbacks would take the 2001 World Series in 7 games. (You guys really oughta pay more attention when I say these things! *G*)

Quite aside from this being the most exciting Superbowl in years, and the special joy of having the underdog team I was rooting for actually WIN, I thought one of the true highlights was Terry Bradshaw and Paul McCartney singing "Hard Days Night." Totally cool!

Hi Mark. Oh I KNEW it was Pat all right. I wasn't Too much) older than you, when it happened, and I was soooo happy, 'cause the Giants wuz mah team!

Hmmmm, who was the first "sidewinder" kicker? Wasn't Garo Yepremian was it. The "old" kickers that I remember were Hornung, Groza, Blanda, and who was that guy from Philly (started with a "B")

Bloody marvelous game!

Rick

Ah yes....another Brown great! Lou "The Toe" Groza. Rick, how about Tom Dempsey? Remember him? Only had half a foot and he kicked the longest field goal in history....63 yards.....Is that still a record?

I remeber reading alex Karras' book where he described that kick. Karras said he and the other Lions didn't even really rush the Saints and pretty much just turned around to get a good view of this laughable 63 yard attempt. I think he used the word numb in describing his amazement that it went through.

Yeah Myrrz....I think Bud won the commercial contest.....The Clydesdales bowing at New York City, the Hawk pilfering pilsners and bras.......Pretty good effort.

And the BattleBots parody, and the slippery satin sheets, and "So how much?" Some brilliance there. Almost makes me want to go out and buy some Bud Light. Almost.

Tom Dempsey was an Eagle before he was a Saint, of course. And as soon as I have my ginkgo I'll probably remember the name of the Eagles old kicker for Rick. And who was the guy who was both QB and kicker? Was it Blanda?

Aloha,
Mark

Blanda also played QB.

As soon as Rick said "B" the only Eagle that immediately came to mind was Chuck Bednarik. I don't recall him ever kicking a goal, but he kicked a lot of ass!!! As I recall he did boot Gifford through the uprights didn't he? There was only one running back who was ever a match for Bednarik.

Could the kicker have been named something common like Brown or Baker....kinda' sticks in my mind. Also, who did come first in the sidewinders? Could it have been Stenerud (sp) with the Chiefs?

And speaking of Alex Karras.............was there ever a funnier moment in film than when he cold cocked the horse in Blazing Saddles? I almost wet myself.
