I have uploaded to my YouTube channel Piney Wood Hills sung by Janet Jones on the LP "Sing To Me Lady".

Thanks for the link, eanjay. I'm impressed by the fine photographs of forests. Good work.

I'm not so impressed by Janet Jones. I can't understand half the words. It's not that hard to sing consonants if you just think about it.

ASCAP.com says Buffy Sainte-Marie wrote PINEY WOOD HILLS. It has also been recorded by Bobby Bare and by Rickie Simpkins.

And the additional guitarist on the original 1960s recording was a gentleman who rejoiced in the name of " Daddy Bones" , if memory serves ?? I loved "Groundhog" ,too , where she (Buffy !) twangs a bow in her mouth !

Here are the Digital Tradition lyrics for PINEY WOOD HILLS. I'm listening to the original recording to verify lyrics. My corrections are in italics - feel free to post corrections to my corrections below. I verified that Buffy was the songwriter, so that should be added, too. I capitalized Piney Wood Hills within the text of the lyrics, just because I like to. I don't know if "Piney Wood Hills" is a proper name, or not.

PINEY WOOD HILLS
(Buffy Sainte-Marie)

I'm a rambler and rover and a wanderer it seems
I've traveled all over, chasing after my dreams
But a dream should come true and a heart should be filled
And a life should be lived on in the Piney Wood Hills

I'll return to the woodlands, I'll return to the snow
I'll return to the hills and the valleys valley below
I'll return as a poor man, or a king, if God wills
But I'm on my way home to the Piney Wood Hills

I was raised on a song there, I done right, I done wrong there
And it's true I belong there, and it's true it's my home

From ocean to ocean, I've rambled and roamed
And now soon I'll return to my Piney woods Wood home
Maybe someday I'll find someone who will
Love as I love the my piney wood hills

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQ_2jw8YoZ8 is a recording from the 1987 Vanguard Buffy Sainte-Marie Greatest Hits album, so I imagine it's the original recording. After the third verse, Buffy returns to the bridge and then ends the song with Verse 2.

She did an album in 1996 called Up Where We Belong, which was mostly re-recordings of her earlier songs. Many of these recordings had slightly different lyrics. Some I like better than the originals, some not. Here's her 1996 recording of this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEYv7Ssx7_g

I like this Bill Staines recording of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuSpL4phRCs

From the Buffy Sainte-Marie Songbook, Grosset & Dunlap 1971:. A couple of minor changes: wand'rer, chasin', I've done right, Ive done wrong there, valleys. She does not capitalize piney wood hills, but I gather they comprise a lot of western Canada. Included are guitar chords and piano score. The book includes 60 songs she wrote, all with guitar chords, most with melody lines and many with piano chords, also discography up to 1971. I have not been able to find a listing of the songs on line and if anyone is interested I can submit that. - Charles

Hi, Charles - songbook indexes are always helpful. There is an indexing thread for Miscellaneous Songbooks (click). That's a pretty good place for it, I think.

cetmst, does the songbook say "I was raised on a song there"? I always sang, "I was raised, I was born there; I've done right, I've done wrong there...". valleys in the plural, "now I'll return to my piney woods home" and "love as I do, my piney wood hills." The latter variations are tiny and inconsequential, but I mention because of Joe's strikethrough editing. For the database, I suppose it would be best to give the lyrics as Buffy St Marie copyrighted them.

Words and punctuation from the book; line breaks are best I can come up with. My computer skills are about the third grade level but if you would like a copy of the song with guitar and piano chords send a mailing address to cetmst@gmail.com
