OBIT: Pippi Longstocking Has Sailed Away

See this for a nice appreciation of Astrid Lindgren, who died yesterday at 94. Once again, I mourn the loss of someone I thought was already dead... and there are some Pippilotta songs, aren't there?

Thanks, Mrrzy, for posting this. I had not heard that Astrid Lindgren had passed away. Sad news, but a long life well lived.

As a child, the character Pippi Longstocking simultaneously fascinated and frightened me. Guess I was one of the "Annikas" of that time. I didn't want to be just like her, and I never really took to heart the books' lessons about daring to taking chances in life, but she did teach me to "break out of the mold" at least a little bit!

Is there a link to Lindgren's other works? Only one non-Pippi book is mentioned by name in the bio linked above ("Ronia the Robber's Daughter"), but apparently there are dozens more. But like so many children's book authors, she's best known for the character she first created in order to entertain her own children. I'm glad she shared Pippi with the rest of us.

It's sad that Astrid is gone as she was a wonderful woman, not just a good author. I'm proud to be from Sweden when she's mentioned. She has really put Sweden on the map, it seems. Her books were spread all over the world. She also wrote texts to songs (Pippi Longstocking, but also others) and some of them are really loved by us. I'll try to find out if some of them is translated...

The most loved and sung song is "Ida's summer song". Here's a midi: Idas sommarvisa. Unfortunately the text on the site is in Swedish. Have somebody heard this melody? The song is from another of her books, "Emil in Lönneberga"; Emil was a mischievous boy who made his father crazy, but also a very kind child at times!

By the way, Tears for Bears have recorded Pippi Langstrumpf (Live)

I like their recording even if they've made some changes...

Probably my daughters' favourite - Pippi. Although the French have turned her into
'Fifi Brindacier' to avoid evoking certain bodily functions :-). Sad to see Astrid passing
away - but she definitely got a long innings. There was a very good, German-made
documentary on TV here during the summer about Astrid Lingren - I suppose
it'll get a few showings in the weeks to come.

Brindacier, what a great name! Kind of "twig of steel" or "blade (as in of grass) of steel" - perfect! What was she called in other languages, anybody?

Pippi Langstrumpf (longstocking) in German, but I was surprised to learn from Berits post that Michel from Lönneberga was in the original Emil.

Not all that familiar with the lady or her work. However it is a sad day when someone who makes others happy passes. Fair winds and following seas dear Astrid! Neil

Pippi was my hero as a child.
I once asked my mother if I could wash the wood floor in the living room. I think she was surprised that I'd offered to do any housework. Cut to the scene where mom comes in to find me, sponges on my feet, skating about in the soapy water on the floor. No, she didn't stop me, but she laughed a lot. There was a streak of Pippi in Mom, too.
