If they'd been owned by me, the auctioneer would still be standing on the block with the second or third guitar going "Do I hear 400 hundred dollars?" Link is here. |

If I had an early 60s 345 again, I wouldn't auction it for charity unless all my fingers were broke forever. And a '58 Explorer - the 345 I had went on a '74 Explorer and I loved it despite the weight. The Explorer went on a '56 Les Paul, but I still wish I had that '62 ES345. The man has GIVEN GENEROUSLY, and if someone is stupid enough to pay these prices they deserve to be ripped off. |

I think (this is all conjecture, for I am but a poor man) that people who can afford these things fall into 2 categories: The Collector, who will allow a beautiful instrument to "sleep" on the wall, under a case, or behind closed doors...And The Fanatic, the person who mortgages everything they've got to have a shot at owning and playing an Idol's instrument. |

I can see how some of these have some historic value, for example some the Strat that Layla was played on, but $450,000??? The Explorer was $120,000. I don't recall Eric ever playing that one, I'm fairly sure that it was only one that he collected. My favourite items were the Versace guitar straps that went for $9,000 & $15,000. I guess you'd need one of those to play that Gucci guitar that I menioned awhile ago Gucci Guitar. I know Muddy & John Lee never had a Versace strap. I have a feelling that all of this stuff was purchased by Nigel Tufnell and is now residing in his guitar room. "Don't look at it". |

31 Jan 02 - 10:19 AM (#639328) Subject: RE: Clapton's Auctioned Guitars - $$$ From: M.Ted Strangely enough, the "Layla" lick was played not by Clapton. but by Duane Allman--Clapton never played the lick in concert, always leaving it to the other guitar, and he finally re-arranged the song without the lick, which, IMHO, was not an improvement-- Though these guitars apparently went for enormous amounts at auction, I wonder how much anyone would be able to resell them for-- |
