I'm looking for the lyrics to Cyril Tawny song that started "When you're sailing out there for the first time..." Any offers?

I came across this request while researching another Cyril Tawney song. Anybody know this one?

Try a PM to Radriano. He has Tawney's book of songs.

So have I but I don't recall seeing it in there. To be honest, I've never heard of it! I'll have another look. Do you know the title?

Is this what you're looking for: Lyr Add: An Owen Hand Song?

I have Cyril Tawney's "Grey Funnel Lines" but I'm fairly certain it's not in there. I'll double check that tonight.

I have the abovementioned CD, got it at PNW Folklife awhileback and yes, it was at Elderly. I don't think they have been for awhile. Somebody will have it in stock if Dick can't get it.

To my recollection, _Grey Funnel Lines_ contains none of Tawney's own songs except the one alluded to in the title, which appears as a sort of frontispiece. The book is an anthology of 20th-century British Navy songs.

There is a book _Songs of Cyril Tawney_, but it contains no songs with the line mentioned.

According to this page, the album Maurice referred to is Cilla Fisher & Artie Tresize, "For Foul Day and Fair" (1978), and the song is "The First Time" (Archie Fisher).

Yes, the song "The First Time" on For Foul Day and Fair begins with the line "When you're sailin' out for the first time." Most of the words are on the thread that Mick mentions,
Lyr Add: An Owen Hand Song, and I will post the complete lyrics from the album notes there later tonight.

Here's a copy of my post to the other thread:

Kendall sings the song beautifully -- as can be heard on the radio piece that Raquel Maria Dillon recently did on the April Portsmouth Shanty Session. It was recently rebroadcast on "Here and Now" on public radio and can be heard at http://www.here-now.org/shows/2003/06/20030624.asp (Scroll down to "Sea Shantys"

or at http://www.nhpr.org/view_content/4744/ for the original airing on NH Public Radio.
