30 Jan 02 - 09:05 PM (#639030) Subject: Jan. 30: worst date ever? From: Suffet Is January 30 the worst date ever? Or at least the worst date in the 20th century, just passed? Consider the following: January 30, 1933: Adolf Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany. January 30, 1948: Mahatma Gandhi is assassinated. January 30, 1972: Britsh troops open fire on unarmed civil rights demonstrators in Derry, NI, killing 13 and wounding many more. Need I say more? --- Steve |

30 Jan 02 - 09:24 PM (#639043) Subject: RE: BS: Jan. 30: worst date ever? From: Amos I'm sorry but that was done by the Roman Emperor Numa and modified later by the Decemvirs, a panel of ten magistrates, around 450 BC. Julius Caesar and his advisor Sosigenes then straightened out the loose ends around 46 BC. It was finally trimmed back to match the solar cycle by Pope Gregory in 1582. Render unto Caesar...

31 Jan 02 - 07:53 AM (#639257) Subject: RE: BS: Jan. 30: worst date ever? From: Wolfgang I second Benjamin of course. Go to one of the many sites who list events per day of the year and you'll see that. But just to keep in step with the start of the thread I just went to such a site and can add: Jan 30, 1945: 'Wilhelm Gustloff' torpedoed by allied submarine, more than 7000 refugees dead in worst single vessel loss ever Jan 30, 1958: House of Lords passes bill allowing women in, oh wait, does that come under bad or under the heading of good news? From: Wolfgang Just to follow Benjamin's idea I choose the second to last day of the following month as a target and here you go (only from one site with such dates): Feb 27, 1925, Hitler forms NSDAP party in Munich Feb 27, 1932 Explosion in coal mine Boissevain, Virginia, USA (38 dead) Feb 27, 1933 Nazis set fire to German parliament, blame it on communists Feb 27, 1942 Battle of Java Sea began 13 US warships sunk-2 Japanese over to someone else for second to last day of March Wolfgang |

Like when I went to the 99-cent movies with a guy who made me buy my own ticket. Lessee... on my birthday, September 7.... Keith Moon died.... Buddy Holly was born.... and in 1876, the citizens of Northfield, Minnesota fought back against the James-Younger gang in a botched bank robbery attempt. |

31 Jan 02 - 10:59 AM (#639370) Subject: RE: BS: Jan. 30: worst date ever? From: Bill D seeing as how theres only 365 days, and there's been ...oh, I calculate 'bout 893 horrible events (that's just since 1066!) (count 'em if you doubt me)...we need a list and a graph...and a rating system!! YES!...and a voting procedure...and a permathread to track the results!...Wow....and songs to commerate the ones that have been missed....and new holidays on the days that are decided to be the saddest!..... So...lets get at it...hey..NO...wait don't....ulllmmmmmmppppfffffffffff |

From: Desdemona I agree with Bill D.: there's only limited number of dates from which to choose, so inevitably there will be good, bad & indifferent events occurring somewhere on all of them! (Personally, I've observed that no good ever seems to comes of Valentine Day, but thst's just me...) |

31 Jan 02 - 08:56 PM (#639690) Subject: RE: BS: Jan. 30: worst date ever? From: Susanne (skw) Maybe it's partly a national thing. For Germany, one contender surely is 9 November: 1918 German capitulation ends WWI (a good thing, on the whole...) 1923 Hitler and associates stage the March on the Feldherrnhalle, Munich (and fail - a good thing in the short term only) 1939 State-engineered pogrom against the Jews known as 'Kristallnacht' in Germany (a thoroughly bad thing) 1989 The Berlin Wall comes down (the jury is still out on whether this was a bad or a good thing) I'm sure Wolfgang or someone else will come up with more events. |
