BS: Why is this place so redundant?

Subject: Why is this place so redundant?
From: michaelr

Hello Catters -

I've been enjoying the Mudcat Forum for about three months now, and I see a repeating pattern: an anonymous GUEST will make an iflammatory posting, and a large chorus of members will spend a lot of time and cyber-breath trying to explain why they don't like such postings.

I have a really easy solution to the problem: If all of us members

D O N O T R E S P O N D

not a word... not even a :( ...nothing...those GUESTS will surely lose interest and go away if we don't rise to their bait.

Presto: Problem gone.

Cheers, Michael

I agree. Let's just ignore the "guests" who are just trying to create trouble.

Omigod! We used to go skinny dipping in Don Otre's Pond. That's where we have the Initiation Rites, Hazing and Instruction in the Special Handshake for new members of the Inner Clique.

p.s. Generally I agree it's best to ignore the little mosquitos. Sometimes though, it's just fun to tweak 'em.

Hi Michael,

The interesting thing is that while your point is well taken, as long as someone trolls and is responded to (ad nausium for some people) there is always someone who points out just what you've pointed out.

I respect your opinion, but some of us just LIKE having fun with the trolls. We don't think we're wasting our time. And if we are able to occupy the time of the idiots, maybe they'll leave other good people alone. They don't get me made - they amuse me. Like a (Black)cat playing with a mouse.

I'll let you in on a secret: That the response threads are a well-orchestrated plot to keep the trolls busy. You'll notice, if you look that we have people on at least 3 continints responding - so we can keep them busy 24 hours a day. (I myself take the nightshift in the Eastern part of the U.S). Eventually, we wear them down...

michaelr, don't you realize what you've just done? You've just started exactly the sort of thread you're complaining about. I predict three sequel threads and a total of five hundred posts, minimum, for this one before it dies.

Not to split hairs, but you mean repetitive. If the place were redundant, that would mean there were other places where folk music was discussed, making this one unnecessary. But in fact, this place is not redundant. Loopy threads and all, it's one of a kind!

I just wonder how many times a person can start use the same basic troll and people can post the same basic responses before we get bored stiff and try talking about something else.

I started a couple of the above, but not all. Of course, the rest of ye have no way of knowing that, but it does amuse me knowing there is more than one of me.

Like shootin' fish in a barrell, trolling the membership of this place. And if it is just fine with everyone here that Blackcats and WyoWymmin like playing/trolling, I don't see how anon guests doing it is any different.

Of course, I'm sure many of you won't see it that way, but knowing that cheers me up too.

I also question the form "so redundant"--I don't think there are degrees of redundancy(the song was done as a ballad, but it was redone dancy)--

AS blackcatter pointed out, while the little dear is peering into the barrel, it keeps him out of muschief. (It hs to be a "him" hasn't it?)

Has anyone ever tried shooting fish in a barrel? I'd imagine it could be quite entertaining for spectators, what with the bullets going through the side and the water spouting out. I don't imagine the fish would get hit very often, what with refraction and that. And anyway it's pretty dark inside the average barrel.

From: GUEST

Like I said McGrath, what's good for the goose. If members aren't reigned in by community policing here for their trolling and flaming, I don't know how any of you ever expects to be successful at community policing guests.

Which is what makes this place so bitter. Members believe they should control the behavior of guests, rather than control themselves.

But the irony of that one is lost on Jeri.

If you really want to see redundancy, log into friends reunited and have a look at their members book (http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk/FriendsReunited.ASP?WCI=MemoryBoard&bb_type=M) or guest book (http://www.friendsreunited.co.uk/FriendsReunited.ASP?WCI=MemoryBoard&bb_type=G). A little clique of drivellers who have hijacked something intended for other purposes and use it like a chat room - I've overheard better conversations from 8 year olds in the school cloakrooms....

Even this sort of thread here has something going for it. I'm not sure what...

GUEST:

It's funny you're the only one that has mentioned that I have trolled. Usually I get compliments for some of my statements and requests to be more clear on some of my others. That is, except for you because you seem to have a rather weak grasp of English and seem to take some of my comment out of context. That is a trolling action.

I rarely start a thread, and oddly enough, I almost always start a music related thread. I have almost never attacked anyone (I'm not perfect) and I usually only respond to other peoples attacks because its fun to do so.

Once again, GUEST, you don't seem to understand that you are not making the majority of Mudcatters upset with your actions. If you derive pleasure from have such a tiny impact on this site, good for you! (Imagine me patting a 3 year old on the head).

If you really think you're hurting the Mudcat or think you're going to make some changes around year you are sadly mistaken (patting you on the head again). Life is short - why don't you get out and see something in the real world?

Memo to Max (or Joe, or whomever is in control):

It might be useful to identify the originator of a thread right in the threads listing at Forum Home. Possible?

Blackcatter - if you enjoy playing ball with the bullies, that's fine with me. I did get the impression, though, that a lot of people here are quite fed up with them, so I thought I'd offer a solution.

Nerd - thanks for the correction.

CarolC - after starting this thread last night I was half hoping to come back today and find NO RESPONSES! I was ready to write Yes! Exactly! What I said! Attaboy! Way to go...etc.

Love, y'all,
Michael

Well, lets see. Actions leading to redundancy?
1. Playing with the trolls
2. Playing solitaire (about the same thing)
3. Dredging up obscure facts (my favorite), obscure words (those from the eastern side of the pond love to post in Urdu or Manx while those on this side post American slang that went out decades ago),
4. Complaining about trolls (very popular)
5. Complaining about people who respond to trolls.
6. Complaining that nobody understands us and we are leaving forever, just to see if anyone will pat us on the head and beg us to stay.
6 Talking politics (that really goes round in circles)
7. Telling everybody that Jan. 30 is the worst day (or the 31st of Feb. or take your pick).
8. Pointing out that the sky is falling (Starbucks under terrorist attack- presumably from Second Cup)
9. BS seriously- about Microsoft, Bill Gates, etc.
10. BS What would you do?
11. Discuss Global warming, Yes/No: Lets see how many mis-information threads we can start on this
12. Bet on how many A's will show up in the next post from Catspaw
11--100. Et cetera
Oh, yes, carrots in the ears, you know.

This is hilarious. Guest has thrown all the old troll threads into the air again- just look at the thread list now. In one of them, Joe Offer noted that the troll had disappeared hours ago (this was back in Sept. or sometime), but mudcatters were continuing to respond. Why? Maybe we are taking out our frustrations with the boss, the newsboy, the wife, the mail service, the taxi driver who got lost, the rotten cantaloupe we brought home.
My concern is that the machines will become overloaded with this junk and make it difficult to find information. Any problem here with useless threads? If so, the threads should be cut (or erased after 3 days). If not, let the blood flow.

From: GUEST

Actually Dicho, I just noticed that isn't only Mudcat's monolithic GUEST who refreshed all those threads.

In that "Actively ignoring threads" refresh (last previous post was late Sept), Mudcat member John from Hull cheerily states:

"I am igmoring a lot of threads right now, especially the stupid ones stated by Guest who cant remember his name. Guest-I am not a vioelent person but if I ever find out were you are I will get a big stickj and smash your computer to pieces, so stop trying to make trouble.john"

So there you go. Mudcat is reduntantly Mudcat because the membership has made this place a troll and flame warrior playground for people with only a marginal interest in discussing music.
