Here is one version, from Rise Up Singing, ed Peter Blood-
Patterson, and attributed to Joe Parrish:

I know that I'd be satisfied,
If I could hop that train and ride
If I make Atlanta with no place to go,
Make me a pallet on your floor

CHORUS: Make me a pallet on your floor,
Make it right down to the door,
Make it long, make it low, so my good gal won't ever know,
Make....

Give everybody my regard,
I'm goin' if I have to ride the rod,
And if I make Atlanta with no place to go,
Make me....

I'm tired and I can't work no more (2x)
Well I'm tired, lonesome, weary and I can't work no more,
Pretty baby now, make....

One more verse...

Come all you good time friends of mine,
Come all you good time friends of mine.
You're all around me now, well, now I'm doing fine,
But where were you when I only had a dime.

Where are all them good-time friends of mine? (Repeat)
When I had a dollar bill, they treated me jus' fine;
Where are they now I don't have a dime?

I'm goin' where the water tastes like wine-- (Repeat)
This New York water tastes like turpentine--
I'm goin' where the water taste like wine.

I'm goin' where them chilly winds don't blow; (Repeat)
When I get to Muscle Shoals, without no place to go,
Make me a pallet on your floor.

The one Doc Watson does goes something like this:

Honey, make me down a pallet on your floor. (2x)
Honey, make it down. Make it soft and low;
Then maybe my good gal she won't know.

I'm goin' up the country through the sleet and snow. (3x)
Ain't no tellin' just how far I'll go.

I get my breakfast here and my dinner in Tennessee. (3x)
I told you I's a-comin' so you better look for me.

Honey, I can't lay down cross your bed.
No, I can't lay down cross your bed.
No, you know I can't lay down cross your pretty bed
'Cause my good gal she might kill me dead.

And don't you let my good gal catch you here. (2x)
She might shoot you cut and stab you too.
Ain't no tellin' what all she might do.

(Repeat first verse)

The way I been a-sleepin' my back and shoulder's tired (3x)
Think I'm gonna roll over, try sleepin' on my side.

(Repeat first verse)

I doubt that he ever does it quite the same way twice though.

MAKE ME A PALLET ON YOUR FLOOR
Mississippi John Hurt

Make me down a pallet on your floor,
Make me down...
Make me a pallet down soft and low,
Make me a pallet on your floor.

CHORUS
Oh, make me down...
Make me down...
Make me a pallet down soft and low,
Make me a pallet on your floor.

Up country...
Up the country where there's cold, sleet and snow,
I'm goin' up the country where there's cold, sleet and snow,
No tellin' how much further I may go.

CHORUS

INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

Way of sleepin', my back and shoulders' tired,
Way of sleepin', my back and shoulders' tired
This way of sleepin', my back and shoulders' tired
Goin' turn over and try it on the side.

CHORUS

Don't you let my good girl catch you here
Please don't let my good girl catch you here
Or she might shoot you, might cut and stab you, too,
No tellin' what she might do.

CHORUS

There's a cleaner version of this done by Sharon, Lois and Bram (Canadian children's group) Anyone know the words to that?

And the version my brother and I have done for the last 30 years (kind of an amalgamation of many versions-but isn't that what folk music is all about)?

Gonna give everybody my regards
Even if I have to ride the rods
When I'm in Georgia with no place to go
Make me a pallet on your floor.

Worried blues are everywhere I see
These worried blues are everywhere I see
These blues are all around me; they're everywhere I go
Make me a pallet on your floor.

I'd be more than satisfied
If I could take that train and ride
When I reach Atlanta, with no place to go
You can make me a pallet on your floor.

There is also a version titled "Cindy Jane" on an old Bob Gibson album.

Come all you good time friends of mine, (2x)
When I had ten dollars, you treated me so fine,
When you knew I only had a dime.

Make me a pallet on your floor, (2x)
Make it soft, make it low, so your woman don't know,
Make me a pallet on your floor.

Sorry, can't recall any more, but these are from a version by Sandy Denny.

Here's a song that could use a bit of study. Here's the Traditional Ballad Index entry:

Lucinda Williams recorded the song on Folways Records in 1979. Here are the lyrics as given in the liner notes.

Make me down a pallet on your floor,
Make me down a pallet on your floor,
Well, make me a pallet baby, down soft and low,
Make me a pallet on your floor.

Make it baby, close behind your door,
Make it baby, close behind your door,
Make it soft and make it low,
Make it where your good gal will never go.

Make me down a pallet on your floor,
Make me down a pallet on your floor,
Make me a pallet baby, down soft and low,
Make me a pallet on your floor.

Well, I'm goin' up the country forty miles or more,
Goin' up the country where the weather suits my clothes,
Well, I'm goin' up the country where the weather suits my clothes,
Ain't no tellin' how much farther I may go.

Make me down a pallet on your floor,
Make me down a pallet on your floor,
Well, make me a pallet baby, make it soft and low,
Make it where your good gal will never go.

Well, the way I'm sleepin', my back end sure gets tired,
The way I'm sleepin', my back end sure gets tired,
Well, the way I'm sleepin', my back end sure gets tired,
Gonna turn over and try the other side.

Make me down a pallet on your floor,
Well, make me down a pallet on your floor,
Uumh, make me a pallet, baby, down soft and low,
Make me a pallet on your floor.

Well, I'll wake up in the mornin' and cook you a real hot meal,
Wake up in the mornin' and cook you a real hot meal,
Just to show you baby, that I appreciated
Everything you done for me.

Make me down a pallet on your floor,
Well, make me down,
Make me down a pallet on your floor,
Well, make me down,
Make me a pallet, baby, make it soft and low,
Make it where your good gal will never go.

Sorry!

I saw the thread title and the words/scansion immediately put me in mind of the hymn "Make me a channel of your love". so . . .

Make me a pallet on your floor.
I know you don't want me to share your bed.
At least you didn't kick me out the door.
You've made me feel quite welcome here instead.
O grant me please that I may never be
The clinging type that will not let you go-o-o
I'll hide my feelings, so you cannot see
That, in secret, how I love you So-o-o.

This is the way I sing it (can't remember where I got it from, or maybe whether I "stitched together" bits from several versions):

Make me down a pallet on your floor
Make me down a pallet on your floor
Make me a pallet soft and low
Babe I'm broke and I got no place to go

Been hanging round with these good time friends of mine
Been hanging round with these good time friends of mine
When I had ten dollars they treated me just fine
Where are they now I only got a dime?

Make me down a pallet on your floor
Make me down a pallet on your floor
Make it soft, make it low, so your momma won't know
Make me down a pallet on your floor

Going up the country by the cold sleet and snow
Going up the country by the cold sleet and snow
I don't know how much further I may go
Going up the country by the snow

Make me down a pallet on your floor
Make me down a pallet on your floor
Make it soft, make it low, so your momma won't know
Make me down a pallet on your floor

Way I sleep, my back and shoulders get tired
Way I sleep, my back and shoulders get tired
Going to roll right over, try it on my side
Way I sleep, I get tired

Make me down a pallet on your floor
Make me down a pallet on your floor
Make me a pallet soft and low
Babe I'm broke and I got no place to go

Don't you let your daddy catch me here
Don't you let your daddy catch me here
He might shoot me, might cut and starve me too
There's no telling what he might do

Make me down a pallet on your floor
Make me down a pallet on your floor
Make me a pallet soft and low
Babe I'm broke and I got no place to go

Hi,

This is a New Orleans blues from the late 1800s. Jelly Roll Morton, who did a version, said the song was in circulation before he was born (1890). Kid Ory played it in one of his bands around 1896. Handy copyrighted the song (1923) as "Atlanta Blues" but knew the melody twenty years earlier. The song was already collected and published by Howard Odum in 1911.

Hi,

This is a Mississippi version probably circa 1908, which can be arranged:

"Make me a palat on de flo',
"Make me a palat on de flo',
Make it in de kitchen behin' de do',
"Make me a palat on de flo'.

Odum began collecting in Mississippi in 1904. The 'palat' lyric appears in another related song he collected.

MAKE ME A PALAT ON DE FLO'
Folk-song and Folk-poetry as found in the Secular Songs of the Southern Negroes: Part 1 by Howard Odum.

"Make me a palat on de flo',
Make it in de kitchen behin' de do'.

"Oh, don't turn good man from yo' do',
May be a frien', babe, you don't know.

"Oh, look down dat lonesome lan',
Made me a palat on de flo'.

"Oh, de reason I love Sarah Jane,
Made me a palat on de flo'."
