BS: Asterix = Ronald McDonald in France?

I am appalled - McDonalds will be using Asterix instead of Ronald McDonald in France... can you believe it? Any songs about old icons being recycled into trash? Why aren't there riots in Paris as we speak?? Auxiris, what do folks say out your way?

And if you want some cool Asterix computer stuff, try this!

Oh, they're moving father's grave to build a sewer...

Oh, they've taken Asterix to sell their burgers...?

Wow. Thanks, guys! Yet again more evidence that my education has been sadly neglected.

Sure wish we had a character this cool to replace Ronald McDonald in the US (sorry, ol' Ronald is just notamusing!).

I know Ronald McDonald sucks we're not too fond of him over here either. But the Mcdonalds breakfasts are quite nice!!!

The great thing about the Asterix books is the double layer, of historical and literary punditry and punning for the adults, pure and simple adventure for the kiddies. I started learning French reading these (and Tintin, but he's already the mascot of the Euro, plus he's Belgian anyway, so I guess they couldn't take him!) and still re-read them occasionally today, and find that there is usually some historical reference or literary pun that I had completely missed, being too young/ignorant at the time of last reading to "get" it. Where is Auxiris? Who else lives in France? WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE???

Hi, Mrrzy. . . sorry about my uninformed response to the PM you sent. No, I hadn't heard anything at all of this clumsy attempt to use Asterix to sell American fast food to French folks. I, too, am utterly shocked! Will try to get the low down on what folks think and get back to you (will be gone a few days to take care of my iris garden). I owe a great debt to the adventures of Asterix and Obelix, as I also learned a great deal of French from them. Is nothing sacred??

cheers,

Aux, who is still completely gobsmacked

From the CNN article that Mrrzy linked: "McDonald's is spending millions of dollars on a series of commercials starring Asterix, promoting for a short time new exotic sandwiches with a Mediterranean twist, such as McGrèce."

But..... but..... but ALL of their sandwiches have McGrease!!

Reminds me of a 'Mercin lady in Fort William asking a local if there were any MacDonnalds' in the area. Was given the short reply, "Not noo there is'ne!"

I thought Obelix's "chest had slipped" because he ate too many roast boar. Now we find out that its because his little 'friend' talked him into eating at McDonalds. OUTRAGEOUS!! ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUS!! Is nothing sacred? But does this mean you might get shoddy collectible figures of some of the Gauls?

Asterix rocks. I grew up with asterix and marvelled at it from the age of seven every year when I went on holiday to france. My mum and dad used to buy me french asterix books to help me learn french. we also used to have french students every year since I was three and they would always bring french asterix books as they knew my parents were keen for me to learn french. I know speak fluent french and I owe a lot of that to asterix, not all though. I do not think asterix's name should be used to advertise over priced american fast food as he is a bigger figure than that. leave ronald mcdonald where he is, he suits the job, aint got a rep to loose like asterix.

A bientot

I have now returned from four fun-filled days of paddling around in the mud trying to sort out my iris garden in central France, which has nothing to do wih this thread! At any rate, the general public reaction—including news media—concerning the flagrant abuse of modern French culture such as Asterix and Obélix is that of outrage and anger. Their "chiffre d'affaire" must really be slipping! But, then again, when you think that McDonalds fast-food joints can't even make decent coffee (even over here!), then maybe it's not surprising that they'll stoop so low. . .

Does this mean that McDonalds will be selling wild boar burgers & Magic Potion?
Amd will I be allowed to bring my little dog?
I recommend any Romans tourists to think twice before they try to enter!
What can we expect next?
Burgerking strike back by hiring Lucky Luke?
KFC co-opt Thomson et Thompson?

Maybe Maccas should scrap Ronald in the USA too, & do a deal with Disney! Micky-Donalds has a certain ring to it.
KFC could hire "Foghorn Leghorn"
And some enterprising youngster could set up a fried rabbit franchise called "Bugses-King"

Eddie,

"...Does this mean that McDonalds will be selling wild boar burgers & Magic Potion? ..."

Don't give the beggers ideas. (I have horrible visions of pork burgers and a "Dr Pepper"copy being sold as the above).

Regards

Walrus

Re: Us 20somethings. I'm not 20something yet and I LOVE ASTERIX!!!!!!!! In fact, I love him so much that when I went to France all I wanted was a real French Asterix book and when I went to Berlin the first souvenir I bought was a German Asterix book, and when I go to Prague and Krakow in April, I'm going to look for MORE furrin Asterix books! My favourite's Cacofonix, because people hate my singing too! Those of you who've heard me sing will agree I'm not brilliant!

Crazy Eddie, where did you grow up? Not many know about Lucky Luke, who is STILL my hero even if they did switch him from a homerolled cigarette to a blade of straw (does straw come in blades? How do you say "brin" in English?)... but note that little dogs, in fact dogs in general, are allowed into restaurants in France already!

But Aux, I'm glad to hear of the outrage and anger - if you could post some vituperative editorials? I'd like to read about just how outraged they are...

Mrzzy,
I grew up in Ireland. Lucky Luke, (l'homme qui tire plus vite que son ombre) was of assistance to my poor attempts to learn French. (Grivelrie: the offence of leaving a restaurant without paying for one's meal. My French teacher didn't know that word, and had to look it up. 26 years later, I still remember it, and have never had the opportunity to use it!).
I think the first Luke comic I read was a gift from my older brother who'd been to France for a visit. The drawings were great, especially the expressions on peoples faces!

Walrus, would you like frites with your wild boar & magic potion? :o)

Oh, come on, guys, I've liked Asterix too, since I was a high school French student in PHiladelphia back in 1967, but isn't there an Asterix THEME PARK in France? Let's not get sanctimonious here. And you should be thankful you're being spared the clown.

Aloha,
Mark

Asterix theme park in France is fine, the ancient Gaul in the modern France. But McDonald's ISN'T FRENCH. It's the Americans usurping the idolized French icon (is that redundant?) that is so outrageous. It would be like using Uncle Sam to sell French wine to Americans, or something.

McDonalds transfered the German Beefsteak (indeed a delicatesse) into that funny parody named Hamburger. They cannot commit a greater crime. Besides, the immortal Asterix is too great to be destructed this way.
