Mad, Venting - Need Music!

Well, my old boss and I had this great arrangement where I would leave work at 2:30 to be home for the boys after school, and make up the time on weekends/after the boys went to bed. This worked fine for a couple of years. New boss - more controlling - says Sorry, if I don't know when you're working, I can't micromanage you (not her words, obviously, but that was the meaning), so no more flex-time for poor old me. So not only do my kids have to go into after school instead of being home (which they will likely enjoy), it means that the only real time I spend with them is Get up go to school, or Take a bath, do your homework, and go to bed. No afternoons of play. And I'm a single parent... *sigh*

So I need some appropriate blues, I think. Talking Single Parent Blues? Gotta get the kids to afterschool blues? Buggerall. This is really going to start bugging me soon!

Sorry Mrrzy, that really sucks. I don't have any songs for you at the moment but if it helps my seven year old gets annoyed if I pick her up too early from her after-school care. She really enjoys the art projects and crafts there.

Unfortunately flex time is so rare, this is more the case than not for most parents, even two-parent families. Sorry it has come to you, too, Mrrzy. Our whole work system needs to be well....reworked!

My kids always enjoyed afterschool and just took it in stride. We had weekends pretty much free, though, and spent lots of time together then.

Good luck to you.

Mrrzy,

This happened to me - and it cost me so much more for childcare that I ended up giving up working (ironically for one of the World's leading poverty researchers - but hey! what do I know?) My kids generally enjoyed after school club - but the other down side was getting home so late and all of us being too tired to cook/eat properly.

What is the (other)employment situation like where you are?

I've had a similar situation; although my job should technically keep me there till 4pm, I've arranged to leave at 3 most days, and go in a bit early, do some stuff at home, etc. My boss is great, but what's happened recently is that the person who I could count on to pick them up once or twice a week so I could make up the difference is no longer able to do so, with the result that my overall pace is becoming a good deal more frantic, with considerably less flexibility; I do sympathise.

This sounds like a Challenge! to me: If there isn't a song about this, there should be...

It's after midnight, here, and I'm too fuzzy-headed to think of one, but maybe I'll tackle it tomorrow...

Maybe a take off on: "There was an old woman, lived in a shoe" (but with her employers getting all whipped soundly, instead of her kids)?

just a thought...

Sorry to hear about the change at work, Mrrzy. I think single parenting must be one of the tougher jobs on this planet. Any chance you could tell your new boss--politely-- to stuff her micromanaging where the sun dont shine and find a job that suits you? Good luck...

Does the new boss have a higher boss? have you been at the company longer? Try showing your past record, and how terrific you are, to a higher up. Might work. Sounds like the newhire is working on points, rather than company efficiency. My past experience: happy employees are productive ones.

An appropriate song for you to sing to your boss would be Elliot Kenin's "Fuck Off and Die"
