Walk on By

If I see you tomorrow on some street in town
Pardon me if I don't say hello (hello)
I belong to another and it wouldn't look so good
To know someone I'm not supposed to know

Chorus : Just walk on by
Stand on the corner
I love you but we're strangers when we meet (repeat)

In a dimly lit barroom on the seamy side of town
Tonight we'll try to say goodbye again (goodbye)
But you know we're only fooling, we'll be back tomorrow night
I can't let you go so why should I pretend?

Chorus

So, what is the title of the Dionne Warwick tune?

They were both called "Walk on By". The first one was written by Kendall Hayes, and was a hit for Leroy van Dyke in 1961. Over the years it has become one of the biggest selling country songs of all time. I am not surprised, I can remember falling in love with the song at the time of its release.

Dionne Warwick's ditty I can take or leave.

I see the folk process has been to work on this one! Following are the correct lyrics, by consensus of several web sites. Differences are marked with italics.

WALK ON BY
(Kendall Hayes)

If I see you tomorrow on some street in town,
Pardon me if I don't say hello (say hello).
I belong to another. It wouldn't look so good
To know someone I'm not supposed to know.

CHO: Just walk on by. Wait on the corner.
I love you, but we're strangers when we meet.
Just walk on by. Wait on the corner.
I love you, but we're strangers when we meet.

In a dimly lit corner in a place outside of town,
Tonight we'll try to say goodbye again (goodbye).
But I know it's not over. I'll call tomorrow night.
I can't let you go, so why pretend? CHO.

[Recorded by Leroy Van Dyke, 1961.]
