Help: What's a good Rory Gallagher CD

Hello there, I'm new here. I was hoping someone out there might help me. My husband LOVES Rory Gallagher and I would like to get him a CD for his birthday as all his were swiped/lost/wrecked over the years. I haven't heard him but I know he was an Irish Blues musician. What's a good CD of his? Thanks in advance!

I've always been partial to this one.

My favourite is the first Taste album.Reminds me of sneeking off to see him play at the Castle in Tooting Broadway in the late 60's and it is on CD

Good choices guys. I'm particularly fond of the Taste stuff myself. My favourite album being On the Boards. You just can't beat the accompaniment of McCracken and Wilson which I think was noticably lacking in some of Rory's later solo stuff.

Justa Picker,

You beat me to that one.

'On The Boards' is a must for any Rory Gallagher fan.I agree about the comment by Den, Ritchie McCracken and John Wilson added that special sound. Great band to watch live, pity there are none like that today.

Justa Picker 's choice of 'LIve In Europe' is also the one for me. It crackles with that energy and sheer guitar virtuosity that shows Gallagher at his best -playing live and hot! PJC I once had the great pleasure of working with him in a studio session on a Davy Spillane album and he was a courtous, gentle man and a TOTAL musician.

I've mentioned this on other threads in the past, but the only time I ever saw Rory Live was on the worst thought out bill I've ever encountered. It was late seventies, CNE stadium. Four acts, Rory, followed by Rick Derringer, followed by Henry Gross, followed by Aerosmith.

For those of you who don't know, Henry Gross was the guy who had the schmaltzy hit "Shannon" about the drowned dog. Who ever decided to put him in with those other acts must have a different career now.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention a friend of mine is Rory fanatic. He just got a video of his '74 Irish Tour. Apparently it's very good. I haven't had a chance to borrow it yet.

I think he said he got it from Amazon.com (which you can link to above and support the Mudcat at the same time).

Record "Irish Tour '74" is the best. Song, "a million miles away" Also, "Tatoo"

He is gone now, but was one of the best and underated. Came in right after the Clapton, Beck, Page, Hendrix,

Peter Green is still the best of his time and space; not counting the elders (A. King, B. King, F. King, etc.)
