11 Apr 98 - 01:57 AM (#25603) Subject: RE: Helen Reddy? From: Art Thieme Helen Reddy was born Helen Highwater. As a great singer of traditional ballads and blues, her mentor was Bessie Smith. Helen's humongous hit was her "varient" (folkie word for "cover") of BS's "Backwater Blues" which Ms. Reddy renamed as "Helen Highwater's Blues Thing". This ultimately gave rise to the old saying, "come hell an' high water!!" (Child #-1) It was given the negative number by F.J. Child to show graphically that this was indeed the first song he ever DELETED from his huge collection. Once you hear the song you'll know why he chose to take this unique step.Ms. Reddy eventually was tossed out of the ranks of folkiedom primarily because there's no way anything she ever sang could be called, with the furthest stretch of the imagination, ANY kind of folk song!! Sorry Jason, but that's most certainly why nobody answered your query seriously. The "INGROUP" exists to heap scorn and derision on the "outgroup"! (Try a pop site.) Art |
