I searched the DT and couldn't find the lyrics to this wonderful Guy Clark song.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Just have a few bits in my head Steve, hopefully someone will come along and give you a blicky. 'Ol Hank would have loved this one, and the question marks are just that,(as taught to me by me brother)
???

Here I sit in Dublin, um hmmm
Smokin cigarettes
Holding back and choking back
The shakes with regret

Forgive me all my anger, forgive me all my faults
There's no need to forgive me for thinking what I thought
I loved you from the get-go and I'll love you 'til I die
I loved you on the Spanish Steps the day you said goodbye

Now I am just a poor boy, um hmmm
Lucks(?) my middle name
If money was the reason
Then I would not feel the same

????

Not the full song Steve but a decent start I hope

HI --

It sounds to me like the word is "work," not luck.

3) I am just a poor boy Work's my middle name If money was a reason/Well, I would not be the same

4) I'll stand up and be counted I'll face up to the truth I'll walk away from trouble But I can't walk away from you

Chorus and musical interlude

5)I have been to Fort Worth,um hum I have been to Spain I have been too proud to come in out of the rain

6) I have seen the David I've seen the Mona Lisa, too I have heard Doc Watson play the (Columbus?) Stockade Blues

Chorus

7) Well, I wish I was in Austin in the Chile Parlor bar Drinkin' Maddog Margueritas And not caring where you are

Hope this helps.

Geez, how'd the lyrics come out all on one line, when I indented it, too? It'll probably come out that way here, too!!

Well, anyway, the first verse is:

1/I wish I was in Austin/ in the Chili Parlor Bar/ Drinkin' Maddog Margueritas/ And not caring where you are.

2) But here I sit in Dublin/ Just rollin cigarettes/ Holdin' back and chokin' back/ The shakes with every breath.

Chorus

3) I am just a poor boy/ work's my middle name/ If money was a reason/ Well, I would not be the same.

And so on.

Dublin Blues

I wish I was in Austin
In the Chili Parlour Bar
Drinkin' Mad Dog Margaritas
And not carin' where you are

But here I sit in Dublin
Just rollin' cigarettes
Holdin' back and chokin' back
The shakes with every breath

Chorus
Forgive me all my anger
Forgive me all my faults
There's no need to forgive me
For thinkin' what I thought
I loved you from the git go
I'll love you till I die
I loved you on the Spanish steps
The day you said goodbye

I am just a poor boy
Work's my middle name
If money was a reason
I would not be the same

I'll stand up and be counted
I'll face up to the truth
I'll walk away from trouble
But I can't walk away from you

I have been to Fort Worth
I have been to Spain
I have been too proud
To come in out of the rain

I have seen the David
I've seen the Mona Lisa too
I have heard Doc Watson
Play Columbus Stockade Blues

Chorus

Repeat 1st half of verse 1

Enjoy!

Thanks folks, it's a beauty ain't it? I especially love the David, Mona Lisa, Doc Watson verse.

And as Guy readily admits, the melody is the traditional "Handsome Molly."

Excellent site RiB, thanks. Great artist with a long career and so many great songs. " The Randall Knife" is another favorite of mine.

,, hit with the smell of the black powder smoke
and the stand in the street at the turn of a joke.

Hard to believe he's been around for thirty years or better.
