I'am fairly sure that this song was written by Dave Mallet. But did not find it in the Dig: super search.. If some one could help me out that would be great. it's almost that time of year here in New England.

He sang it in A Prairie Home Companion (June 20, 1998; Click here, and click on 24:11 RA).

According to AMG, "Greenin' Up" is included in David Mallett's 1999 album "Ambition," Flying Fish #674.

Here's a quote from a review:

Mallett's strength is being able to hold two ideas, two emotions at the same time. In "Greenin' Up" he returns to the garden farm, but instead of the careful cultivation that made the "Garden Song" a hit with the "Tzena Tzena" crowd, this gardener is content - at least for the moment - to leave the world alone. The horse past its prime, the bullfrog in a swamp of "fiddleheads and rotten wood," the seeds of "Every little weed / Every little vine." More than the lure of the idle fishing tackle, it's the realization that, without any help from him, "it's springtime in the country / And the pasture grass is greenin' up real good."

GREENIN' UP
(David Mallett)

There's an old horse in the pasture
And just like me he's seen his better days
But he sniffs the air this mornin'
And his eyes take on an old familiar glaze
He kicks his heels, throws his head
Looks right at me like I understood
That it's springtime in the country
And the pasture grass is greenin' up real good

There's a bullfrog in the bog behind my house
And he'll be makin' such a sound
Long late in the afternoon
Right up till the evenin' sun goes down
He's happy to be livin' in a world
Of fiddleheads and rotton wood
And it's springtime in the country
And the pasture grass is greenin' up real good

It's greenin' up real good
Lookin' mighty fine
Every little seed
Comin' right on time
Up across the field
Up into the wood
It's greenin' up real good

Well I work all day in the garden
This time of year there's just too much to do
But there's a fishin' pole in the corner
And it's strung up with a line as fine as dew
Tomorrow there'll be lots of time
To do the million things I know I should
And it's springtime in the country
And the pasture grass is greenin' up real good

It's greenin' up real good
Lookin' mighty fine
Every little weed
Every little vine
Where the open field
Gives way to the wood
It's greenin' up real good

It's greenin' up real good
Lookin' mighty fine
Every little seed
Comin' right on time
Up across the field
Up into the wood
It's greenin' up real good
