I'm from Houston, Texxass and I play the stereo, haha, I dabble with a nylon-stringed "classical" guitar. I've had it since college, damn near 30 years ago. It's no big name; "Ventura" - ?? Seems OK to me but what do I know? I like just about any music though some I reserve for special occasions and some I tolerate as "background" only. It was a lovely mostly-clear day here, and this afternoon was about 70 fahrenheit. I sat outside and drank a Czechoslovakian beer, now I know why it was so reasonably priced at the market... |

From: nager Harpgirl, I am not sure if I ``qualify" as new either as I have been here a few weeks now... but I am from Newcastle, NSW, Australia and have been playing guitar and singing folk for so many years (both in Oz and England) I would rather not mention the number publicly! Sing and play a bit of everything that sounds folksy or bluesy..no matter when or by whom it was written. Also play piano accordion (my wife's allows it only when she's out shopping), harmonica and recorder. We have a very active folk club in our city and a good one at nearby Woy Woy too, the Troubador...both have web pages .. but don't know how to do a blue click. The NSW Folk Federation site might have links. I have found most people very helpful and friendly on this site and hope the odd piece of info I have passed on has been received well too. |

I play recorder, piano, organ, accordion (mostly for caroling outside - its loud and covers up a lot)pennywhistle some, fife and tabor for renaissance dances, and occasional bandura - a Ukranian folk instrument. So far my only tune on it is Jesu Joy of Mans Desiring which is a great one for tuning all gazillion strings. I'm 19, from Washington D.C. and I've grown up as a member of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, but until about 2 years ago I thought folk music was icky. I'm now attending St. Mary's College of Maryland, and have set up a radio show with a friend "David and Allan's Folking you up since 1982", which is unfortunately quickly running out of new material to play. I'm afraid I play no instruments, though I enjoy singing. My passions in folk music focus on a combination of rowdy (sp?) shanties and beautiful melodic songs. I tend to listen to alot of the Pyrates Royale and Wyld Nept at the moment, and if anyone has bands they think I might enjoy, I'm always looking for suggestions. Pooka, is your name a Changeling referance? Just wondering. Anyone who frequents many events in the Washington area has probably seen me once or twice at some point, and if you attend the Royal Mile Pub sings, then I'm the big bearded guy from the "young people's table". |

Derby, which is kinda south-central. I started performing in the early 60's in Greenwich Village, learned fingerpicking from Dave Van Ronk, play mostly guitar and five string banjo, some mandola, and used to play fiddle when it was needed and there was no one better than me. I play mostly traditional American folk, songs I've written which reflect my love of the tradition, and in more recent years, old gospel. For the last five years, I've been leading a 'cept for me black gospel quartet, doing the old Swan Silvertones, Five BlindBoys, Fairfield Four style of gospel. I play electric guitar with the group (being a traditionalist.) I cut two albums for Folk Legacy, one on my own (Handful of Songs)and the Messengers are currently recording their first CD. I'm recently retired, and playing far more music than I have at any other point in my life. I find it humorous to see the monikers of others in this thread who I assumed were old-timers because their names are so familiar. I enjoy Mudcat a great deal, and was finally encouraged to check it out by my great friends Art Thieme, and Sandy & Caroline Paton. Jerry |

I'm from Canberra in Australia (the national capital) and have been playing guitar for 30 years plus. I've been listening to folk music since forever, and it can all be traced back to the fact that my parents had a stack of Jimmy Shand records, which they played incessantly. Was part of a little three piece group until recently (our female singer left to join the police force!), just playing at a couple of local pubs. We did mostly covers but just started to incorporate some original songs when our singer left. We are now in the process of starting from scratch again with two new singers who can actually sing in harmony, which is new for us as neither myself nor the other guy can hit a note to save our lives. From: Janie I'm a "Tarheelbilly" which means I have lived in Hillsborough, North Carolina (near Durham and Chapel Hill) for 16 years but was born & bred in West Virginia and that is the 1st place to come to mind when people ask where I am from. I sing some--used to play a little guitar and autoharp, was never very good at either-- but arthritis or something has stopped that. As I stated in the other thread about newbies, my main art is appreciation. I am a fan of any kind of well done music but particularly like folk, blues, jazz, gospel, stringband, and most anything that could be called "roots" music. Thanks for asking! |

I on the other hand didn't show up til a year later in late '98 and posted some info on Open D tuning and my love for an Emmylou song, "Prayer in Open D." I can find that info and you can too because everything here is archived. If you "Search the Forum" by member name, or just click on the poster's name in the thread, you can pull up every post they ever made. The "Supersearch" will find you words and phrases in both the Digitrad (DT) and the forum. If you're looking for a song, it's the way to go. Harpy is MUCH older than I am as you can see in addition to the fact that I am far better looking.....You can see that for yourself by going to the Mudcat Photos....See the pulldown menu up there labeled "Quick Links?" I am a Sheep Farmer. I play button accordeon at the local farmer's market in Sydney unless you pay me to stop (or buy my lamb) But I only play my Penny Whistles to my sheep or along with my collection of records and CDs. I love to sing, that's the Irish in me. I try to improve my singing with practice, that's the Welsh in me. I like singing fishing songs, that's the Newfoundlander in me. I like tongue in cheek songs (and tongues and cheeks), that's the West Country English in me. I like bagpipes and drums, that's the Scotch (whisky?) in me. I traded a bunch of sheep and gear for a set of Chris Langan Uilleann pipes, now that's definitely the love of music in me 'cause it makes no business sense. The bellows belt won't go around me waist! They aren't as easy to play as the whistles! I love this café! I am young too... 44 going on 19. |

I play Highland pipes,Flute,whistles,Bodhran,and I've got a Bardic harp (metal strings,great sound).I mostly play traditional dance music but have ventured into Blues and North Indian classical Ragas. Been "into" things FOLK (and related forms - which covers a LOT then, I guess!) since Forever (I did the Big 5-oh thing last year). Don't play any instruments - 'cept the Voice. Love a cappella harmony singing (done quite a bit of that the last 18 years, in groups like Mna / Star Piquettes / No Strings Attached / Sweet Mermaids / Serafina / + various choirs, and currently, a trio named Raw Silk). Help run a monthly folk night at The Up Front Club, Maleny called "A Bit Of FOLK On The Side" - anyone in town on the first Saturday of the month is welcome. This part of the world (Sunshine Coast Hinterland)is also home to the famous and fantabulous Woodford Folk Festival, held every Christmas/New Year on a reclaimed dairy farm amongst the hills of Woodford. Have been interested in folk music since the late fifties, and picked up my first guitar in 1961 to learn traditional ballads of North America and the U.K. Gradually got into old time string band music ,then bluegrass for a few years. Recently felt the need to go back to the old songs again and found the mudcat as well, so I've had a great few months lately reconnecting with the music and with old musical friends. I live in Edmonds,Washington roughly half way between Don Firth and the Deckman (who I hadn't seen for forty Years till I looked in here!) As proof of the prevailing insanity I've acquired while lurking here I've ordered a new button accordion which should be arriving any day! Love traditional Irish dance music. Welcome to all you other new 'cats. I was surprised at how many of you posted here.....I feel in good company with you as well as the remarkable regulars at the mudcat. I hack away at a five-string banjo on occasion, and am currently trying to elicit something more than a fuzzy squeak from the strings of a mandolin... Still play at the odd (emphasis: ODD) Pub a couple of times a month... the music varies with the crowd, but seems to lean strongly to the Celtic / Folk / Original numbers... Play guitar and mandolin, somewhere around 30 years or so- folk, Bluegrass, string band, my beloved cowboy music, etc., but strictly acoustic. Semi-pro for a few years a while back, and still have a little band- we practice every Tuesday night to keep the chops up, and play around town whenever anybody books us. My babies are a D-28 from 1946 and an A-style Gibson mando from 1934, but got lots of other stringy things hangin' around the walls. I'm from Australia, but now live in Santa Cruz, California. I learned songs and performed in the Melbourne traditional music scene in the early seventies -- a mix of Irish, British, and Scots music. I'm revisiting a lot of them and learning some new ones -- for my own enjoyment at home, and for the occasional party. Mudcat folks have been very helpful in pointing me towards some superb male singers. I play an OM-style guitar, and blow a wooden flute from time to time. |

My grandfather was a bluegrass musician and used to take me with him to fiddler's conventions as a child. Played guitar in high school and college, getting ready to start up again with guitar and blues harmonica (the kids are older, I'm finished nursing school...I have some free time now!!!) From: Watersong Interesting reactions to a simple question ... guess we all have a "fellow feeling" as Lee Hays used to say. I'm from the upper right hand corner of Connecticut on the Mass & RI lines. I'm a singer who backs himself (and friends) up with an old Gibson J-50, a Martin D-35-12 and a new Larrivee OM-9 ... and there's an old Epiphone Caballero on our boat. During "Greensong Season" I play with the Irish band Cashel Rock ... we're at the Vanilla Bean in Pomfret Mar 8 & 9. I started the folk thing with a ukelele given to me as a 10 year old in 1955. Got a Harmony dread. in 1957 and haven't looked back. At 16 I thought I was pretty good so I made it to NYC and got food money working for Lee Hayes (transcribing melodies & verses for a post-Weavers record he was about to produce ... "The Baby Sitters") Met lots of interesting people and learned fast that I wasn't quite yet pro material. (first visit Don Mclain made to our apartment made that painfully clear ... he banged out "Old Man Can Your Dog Catch A Rabbit" and I put my ax away ... he was so good on traditional tunes). We live in an old New England "hilltop" village and there are a lot of folkies (pure coincidence) up here ... we get together once a month at someones house and get to it... Old Time Country, traditional, Celtic, Blues ... all acoustic. The young people are FANTASTIC lead instrumentalists ... us old ones tend to better "song rounded" ... a nice bunch of people.Give an email if you are in the neighborhood. If you are a visitor from way afar we can steer you to some good and reasonable B&B's ... this is beautiful country for hiking, birding, biking, canoeing ... and acoustic music. edward.clement@snet.net |

Since I haven't done this before (i.e. answered the questions you asked), here's a bit about me. (You can find photos of me here at Mudcat, but I haven't filled in my personal info page yet. ) I live in Portland, Oregon and play guitar, write songs, and sing. I have a 1955 Martin 00018 and a 1965 Gibson LG-50, which usually stay at home when I'm on the road, while I travel with cheaper imitations. (Steve o., I'm jealous of your D-28.) Portland is my kind of town and climate--moderate climate, lush greenery and flowers, and traffic that's not nearly as gawdawful as Seattle's (where I also spend a good deal of time). I love all kinds of music and sing in about 12 languages. Having grown up singing in church choirs, I love harmonies, counterpoint, etc. Professionally (meaning that I earn my living at it, not that I'm any great shakes), I sing a lot of older pop, c/w, r&b, jazz standards, show tunes, etc., with a little folk thrown in. I do most of my folk stuff in unpaid venues like song circles and open mikes. Mudcat has been a great resource for finding out song histories, lyrics, etc., and a chance to share stuff that I've picked up, too. (No wise cracks, Spaw, OK?) Miken, do you ever go to the bluegrass jam the 4th Sunday of the month at The Grateful Bread (Seattle) or to the SFS Song circles?

My name's Rich Kelly. I play guitar and mandolin and am making headway on the tenor banjo and tin whistle. At least it's not sounding quite like I'm squeezing a cat. My wife and I met in NYC in '95 while I was playing in an Irish trio, mostly in the Bronx. One son later, we moved to Eastern Ct, around Norwich, for a quieter pace while we raise the boy and enjoy being a family. My wife, Dee, has a fantastic voice. Heck, she's even trained! Her background is jazz and show tunes. I came to Celtic music via The Pogues and Oyster Band. In high school I played in a punk band called Nixon's Sweethearts. Yes, my musical sins were many. Our backgrounds, at least, show that musically-mixed marriages do work. Neither of us had performed in the last few years. Last year we were invited to play for several days aboard a tall ship. After being heckled by a British passenger for playing Irish music, we realized how much we missed performing. Last Sept we were invited by sea shantyman Don Sinetti to play a few songs at Sag Harbor's weekend festival. Nothing was thrown at us, so now we're actually rehearsing and hope to get out more often to perform. The name-to cross thread a bit-came from Mick Moloney himself: there were seven of us on one of his tours whom he pegged the Tennessee "Dehrlins" [trust me, it sounds different with an Irish accent]- and I've used it ever' since. Piano, autoharp, bodhran. Did somebody say "shapenote"? Sacred Harp and Gospel. Old time in general. Music teacher by trade/calling- this forum is an incredible source of background info, lyrics, etc. A recent thread on "The Night/Dixie Down" reminded me how important that song was to me-- here I was being taught to sing in "head voice", but how I loved singing along with Baez in her range! Played guitar with a group call The Lowlanders in the mid 60's and gave it up when I took up a job and raising a family. (gave up drinking and smoking as well). Resumed my former life 6 months ago when I retired. I'm back to playing my guitar (and smoking and drinking). Its 3 am and I've just arrived home from a gig.Thanks to Mudcat I'm re-learning several songs I had forgotten (having a lot of trouble with my brain cell trying to absorb the words). Anyhow, it's better to burn out than fade out. I think the guy who said that is long gone...I don't care if I do die do die do die. |

From: harvey andrews For those who weren't there it was at Lunenburg I discovered I was the greatest food treat the mosquito ever had. On stage in the evening I was covered in them, so much so that in the middle of a song the m.c. was so cencerned he came onstage unknown to me and sprayed the carpet of mossies on my back, then the clump on my bald head. Of course, the "Off" (I love the word they don't use) mingled with my sweat and ran into my eyes. A baffled audience heard my roar of pain as I reached for my bottle of water and began pouring it over my face..the situation escalated beyond my control. However when I finished I got a standing ovation!!! Also poisoned ankles.On going to the local doc for treatment he said it was one of the worst cases of mosquito bites going septic he'd ever seen.When it came to payment he asked me "I understand you are performing at our folk festival" "Yes" "Then as a guest of our town, there will be no charge Mr Andrews" Just another of my many "I love Canada" moments. I loved the two Lunenburg festivals I did and then the committee changed and I've not been invited back. This is one of the major problems for the pro musician you fall in love and then you get abandoned because the taste of the booker is not the same as that of the previous one. It's hard sometimes, but you get philosophical! |

We (Starb'ard Side) played most of the years up to that point. You were certainly a huge hit but as you say the faces and tastes change. Have you tried your luck with Stanfest? I know the artistic director caught both of your shows in Lunenburg. It's billed as a songwriter's festival and I've played all but one of them so far. It's developed into quite an event. From: Mr Happy hello world, mr happy here i,ve been around for a while but enlisted for a cookie award way back in april 2002 i impose/ inflict my songwriting on unprepared audiences and accompany these compositions with an unusual style of guitar playing. i also enjoy slow airs and for this reason play them on melodeon/mouth organ/whistle i'm in two groups, a duo & a trio i live in chester uk & the weather always consists of sunny spels [oops, can't spel] & rarely scorchio i get around to lots of festivals during the season. this year, having discovered mc + gatherings, its my intention not to attend any more pay fests. but go to mc gatherings & other free do's like pvff beverley where its just constant hedonism etc i've rambled on too long eh? i've got the music in me [or is it the wixy?]

I also read and post from work, not hooked up at home, which is also why I post mostly as a guest, though I am registered, and sign my name so people can know where it's coming from. I am a lifelong music fan, played mostly drums for a while, than flute, bagpipe chanter, would like to get a set of uilleann pipes someday, picked up a few ukuleles that I tormented friends and family with, now am struggling as well with the Mandolin, picked up a real sweet 'B & J Serenader' in it's original case for 20 bucks, a set of new strings and it sounds great (unless I'm abusing it with tired bleeding fingers!). Am mostly these days interested in celtic, but love trad. music of all kinds, have had a world music radio show in the past, and folk show and celtic show, and blues show, and jazz show, and hope to do more celtic radio in the future, big record collection, select cd collection, lots of books, really try to get at the history of songs and thier singers. I detest the music of most contemporary 'singer-songwriters' though not all of them. And love to sing. I am trying in my own way to encourage everyone to sing in public more often, and learn the old songs. |

I'm 24 and have always been into trad music, having been fed liberal amounts of it by my guitar-playing (and singing) parents. It obviously worked as all 3 of us kids grew up musical. I mainly play the Scottish small pipes and border pipes, but also whistles, cittern, fiddle, bodhran... etc with varying degrees of ability. I used to sing quite a bit but have fallen out of it recently. If there were 48 hours in a day it wouldn't be enough time to play music in. I keep having to stop myself from buying more instruments. But I WILL learn the highland pipes soon... sorry neighbours... :-) My boss gives me funny looks when I tell him I've been at a session and tells me off for drinking in 'old men's pubs'. I like old men's pubs... |

I'm in Westchester County, NY -- the PO says we're in Bronxville, we 're closest to Tuckahoe, but the tax man says we're in Yonkers ("Next to the Greatest City in the World"). I've been plinking at a guitar forever, on a banjo almost as long, and squeeking on a tin whistle for a while -- and all without any signs of progress or self-confidence enough to go out in public. But I'm not shy about singing out, in groups or alone unaccompanied, and will tonight at the Pinewoods FC Riverdale Sing. I may take along the Jew's Harp that I resurrected from the back of a drawer, to see how tolerant they are. |

I've tried playing guitar, with no real success to date but sing regularly, mostly traditional English folk, at a Hertford venue and any other I can find and manage to get to. A friend tells me I'm an addict and I think he's right as far as both the music and the 'Cat are concerned. That's the trouble when you're a late convert! Oh yes, the weather is lovely now, reasonably hot days and cool nights. It's a bit cloudy tonight so can't see Mars in all its glory at the moment, but that has been rather good to watch. |

I was from Melbourne before I became a New Englander (the "other" New England, centred on 31°30'S, 151°30'E). I started off singing a bit and like unaccompanied harmony (as it used to be called) but got waylaid by a lagerphone and then seduced by the leather ferret. It's what I mainly play these days but I'll use melodeons for old time dances and mouth organs for special accompaniments. Having inherited a fiddle and a banjo I'll have a try at them. Daughter #1 (who has just finished high school) is into piano, although ukelele has sidetracked her a bit, and Daughter #2 is a demon on most sizes of recorder. They've both ripped much of my CD collection (which is rather eclectic) and, when I retrieve the turntable from storage, I guess they'll rip the vinyl (even more eclectic) as well. One day I might be able to get one (or both) of them to teach me how to read and (introducing a completely nonmusical touch) to use a sewing machine. Cheers, Rowan |

It wasn't until I read "Generations" (a great book on gendered patterns of inheritance that concentrated on what mothers passed to their daughters, and why) that I realised why my mother, a seriously great seamstress and knitter, had always refused to let me anywhere near her Singer.
