In fact, many viruses work that way - they come from someone you know because the virus was clever enough to steal all the addrs in your friend's file or your friend sent you and email and didn't know he had a virus that attached itself to the email. The easiest thing to do is never open attachments ... unless you requested, know what they are and who is sending them. And even then it is wise to scan them with an up-to-date anti-virus scanner. |

I routinely delete messages from people I don't know - especially if they contain attachments. Such was also the case with this message. So, my question was not whether what was in the attachment was genuine, (because I never read it) it was whether the email, itself was genuine. I believe I have gotten the answer. As I suspected, someone I don't know has far too much time on his/her hands. Thanks for the responses, folks. |

Then I have two virus checkers running, just in case! you too can do this with Pop Tray (this one is pretty neat!) |

The problematic emails are the ones from people you know. The problematic emails are the ones with ATTACHMENTS. A smart virus uses the email accounts and address books of people you know and trust. It sends emails from their accounts without their knowledge. If you get an email with an attachment from someone you know, reply immediately and ask if they actually sent it. Your reply might be their first clue that THEY have a problem. |

At the time I was as suspicous as others, due to the fact that there was no date just two weeks ago, with on line could meen anything for about say 10 years back. So, anyone know if there is a real virus attached? My norton's didn't detect anything... The e-mail was intentionally sent out, unlike many viruses that just send themselves. This would be prosecutable. While I'm sure mass mailing of chain letters violates AOL's Terms of Service, most of us probably weren't bothered enough to complain to AOL about it, and it would take a whole bunch of complaints for them to do anything. If I start getting a pile of spam, I will, but one little chain letter hasn't given me enough motivation. Interesting to read all those e-mail addresses, though. Bill, I can delete stuff off the server too. If I notice a really big file coming in, I'll often stop it and go see what it is and who sent it. The only harm these things can do to me is to make me take the time to download them, and I don't even have to do that anymore. |

From: McGrath of Harlow Recently various people on my address book, together with others who weren't even in my address book, but were on the address list of a letter that had been sent to me, received an email ostensibly from me with a virus which I gather included a virus.
Moral, as has been said above, don't trust an attachment even from someone you know unless you are sure it's from them. And even then you aren't safe.
I try never to send attachments, but instead to put whatever I want to send up in my webspace, and send a link to it in the email. So far as I know that is still safe.
And my security systems are now a lot better than they were. |

I report all the SPAM I receive, whenever I have time to deal with it - check the complete header to identify the source (you can set your email messages to show the full header of how the message was routed). I quickly trashed all the spam in my email box this morning, including that message, but now I wish I had forwarded it to aol so they would close the account. So... if anyone still has it, send it on to abuse@aol.com, complete with the header showing, and the original message. Spam sucks. Join in the effort to report whatever you can. Big red "VIRUS ALERT!" banner. When that happens, I note who the e-mail came from and if it's someone I know, I notify them. If NAV doesn't flag an attachment, I save it to a floppy and scan it with NAV. If NAV says it's clean, I go ahead and open it. Attachments are too good a way to send documents, photos, and other materials not to use. I've been shot at a couple of times, but NAV is like Kevlar BVDs. NEVER store addresses on your computer.
At the least, store them on a card inside your wallet/purse so they are available where ever you travel.

But I just checked, and found out that I can even access it when I'm not on-line, which leads me to think that this address book is stored on my hard drive rather than with AOL. So now I'm concerned about it. I like to use this function because my brain is sometimes a bit unreliable and I'm concerned about typing an address incorrectly and sending an e-mail to a total stranger. Does anyone know if keeping addresses in my AOL address book is as risky as having them in some other location on my hard drive? |
