26 Feb 02 - 03:43 PM (#658406) Subject: RE: 'Now I don't like to be pedantic ' From: GUEST Although I'm not pedantic if it's not called for, sometimes I have to be in order to get details from being misinterpreted, because popular terminology is much the same as the specialist terminology, but can bring in vastly different images to the reader than the one which the specialist wishes to convey. |

26 Feb 02 - 04:21 PM (#658423) Subject: RE: 'Now I don't like to be pedantic ' From: Little Hawk Pedants are pompous, swell-headed, contemptible swine! They should all be deported to Tierra Del Fuego! Oh, by the way, GUEST, you left out the comma after "Now"...unless you meant that you used to like to be pedantic, but that you don't like to be pedantic at the present time... So, I believe you should have written: "Now, I don't like to be pedantic..." (Heh! Heh!) - LH |

26 Feb 02 - 05:20 PM (#658478) Subject: RE: 'Now I don't like to be pedantic ' From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Little Hawk, what would Mudcat do without pedants? I like to think we are the salt of the earth. Anyone who has peed ants should see their friendly neighborhood exterminator. This thread shows that we need guest trolls to start rolling the ball of dung. The sentence posted by Guest, with the word "Like," should read: I do not wish to be perceived as a pedant but as a .....! |

26 Feb 02 - 06:07 PM (#658522) Subject: RE: 'Now I don't like to be pedantic ' From: mack/misophist Dear Spartacus, Thanks for giving me this opportunity to be pedantic myself. You're right. 26 Feb 02 - 06:28 PM (#658541) Subject: RE: 'Now I don't like to be pedantic ' From: gnu Perhaps our guest was asking for our opinions on the use of single quotation marks which are sometimes used in place of the "double", especially in British usage. Of course, this query is obviously not in reference to the use of single quotation marks within double quotation marks as the rules for such usage are quite clear. 'gnu'or"gnu" |

26 Feb 02 - 06:42 PM (#658557) Subject: RE: 'Now I don't like to be pedantic ' From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) A printer once told me that no book exists in which all of the quotes have been properly set. Quotation marks are a proof-readers, and a typesetters, nightmare. I know type is no longer set, but electrotyped (no, now computer printing has arrived), but the observation still holds. |

27 Feb 02 - 09:41 AM (#658987) Subject: RE: 'Now I don't like to be pedantic ' From: Bill D the missing 'pedant' was supplied by 'death by whisky', and was not actually necessary to indicate the required tune, however, I am surprised that no TRUE pedants have noted that the Pink Panther rendition requires an accent on the wrong sy-LAB-ble. (The original 'joke' was, "What did the Pink Panther say when he stepped on an ant?"..."Dead ant...dead ant....etc.", which does not require incorrect emphasis for its juvenile humor)
