Origins: Seven Daffodils / Seven Golden Daffodils

Subject: Seven Golden Daffodils - info please!
From: rich-joy

I posted the following request in the recent "Flower Songs" thread on Feb 21st, but it was seemingly at the end of its current life, so I thought I'd have a go with a new thread :

"I was interested to see Allan C.s mention (early in this thread)of "Seven Golden Daffodils" and that it was in the DT. This was one of my faves back in the early 60's when it was put out by a group called The Cherokees (who were???) on Columbia - the record (I still have my 45!!!) attributes it to Mosely-Hayes, but I guess that could just be the group's arrangement. What is the origin/history of this song - is it old/traddy??? How much does the tune of the DT version differ from the pop charts one, I wonder?? Can anyone help? Cheers! Rich-Joy"

I was under the impression that lee hays and his sister wrote it. Not one of his stronger efforts, but one of the most commercial.

Hi! I'm reviving this thread coz I found a set of words and references to L.Hays (Lee Hays?) and F.Moseley as authors, but I'm having trouble with the GUITAR CHORDS.
I also don't know how different the "original" is from my pop cover by The Cherokees. Can anyone advise??
Thanks - Cheers! R-J

I don't have the book, but it's in Ronnie Gilbert, ed., TRAVELIN' ON WITH THE WEAVERS: Arranged for piano and guitar by Herbert Haufrecht (NY: Harper & Row, 1966) ["Contains 59 songs from slavery and civil war days, the Depression, blues, work songs, &c. Illustrated by music and lyrics throughout"].

I'm just having a trawl through unanswered requests and this has one for chords, so we might as well cross it off, belated though the answer may be. I haven't sung this for 35 years or so, but this is what I have in one of my old song folders (actually in F there, but given in C here).

Mick

SEVEN DAFFODILS
(Lee Hays)

(Am)I may not have a mansion, I haven't any land
Not (Dm)even a paper (Am)dollar to (F)crinkle in my (G7)hand.
But (C)I can show you (Dm)morn-(G7)ing (C)on a thousand (Em)hills
And (F)kiss you , and give you seven (C)daff-(G7)o-(C)dils.

Hope this helps

The title is actually SEVEN DAFFODILS, although a few recordings have been made under the title SEVEN GOLDEN DAFFODILS. It was written by Lee Hays and Fran Moseley. There aren't any recordings listed on allmusic that credit anyone else as songwriter (if you allow for misspellings—some sources use the misspellings Hayes, Fred, Mosley, or Megelay). The BMI Repertoire has the odd spelling DAFFODILLS.

There have been recordings by Kenny Ball and His Jazzmen, The Blueground Undergrass, The Brandywine Singers, The Brothers Four, Tom Chapin, Lonnie Donegan, Good Medicine, Nobuyoshi Ino, The Lords, The Mojos, Nina & Frederik, Jimmie F. Rodgers, The Seldom Scene, The Shaw Brothers, Alice Stuart, and The Tarriers.

Who wrote the song "Seven golden Daffodils"? Did anyone ever record it? I would love to hear it again after hunting for it since the 1960's.

Here are the lyrics from the Digital Tradition:

SEVEN DAFFODILS

I do not have a mansion, and I haven't any land,
Not even one dollar to crinkle in my hand.
But I can show you morning on a thousand hills,
And kiss you and give you seven daffodils.

I do not have a fortune to buy you pretty things,
But I can weave you moonbeams for necklaces and rings,
And I can show you morning on a thousand hills,
And kiss you and give you seven daffodils.

Seven golden daffodils, all shining in the sun,
They light the way of evening, when our day is done.
And I can give you music, and a crust of bread,
A pillow of piney boughs to rest your head.

I listened to recordings by the Brothers Four, Shaw Brothers, Brandywine Singers, and Limeliters. All are more-or-less the same, but some start out "I haven't any mansion." Here is what's printed in the songbook, Travelin' on with the Weavers (by the Weavers, Harper & Row, 1966). I guess I'd say these are the definitive lyrics.

SEVEN DAFFODILS
(words by Fran Moseley, Music by Lee Hays)

I do not have a mansion, I haven't any land,
Not even a paper dollar to crinkle in my hand.
But I can show you morning on a thousand hills,
And kiss you and give you seven daffodils.

I do not have a fortune to buy you pretty things,
But I can weave you moonbeams for necklaces and rings.
And I can show you morning on a thousand hills,
And kiss you and give you seven daffodils.

Seven golden daffodils, all shining in the sun,
To light the way to evening when our day is done.
And I will give you music and a crust of bread,
A pillow of piney boughs to rest your head.

I do not own a mansion, I haven't any land,
Not even a paper dollar to crinkle in my hand.
But I will show you morning on a thousand hills,
And kiss you and give you seven daffodils.

Fran Moseley was the sister of Lee Hays.

The lyrics from the Weavers are the same as those used by the Brothers Four, from "Sing of our Times"(1966?), which is still available from Amazon, with song clips, for those who are interested. Beautiful song, they do a great job, and for those who are into odd bits, or useless miscellaneous, it's tremendously popular in China and Japan. I think the BF are still touring and have just been out to Asia, which may explain it.

Actually, According to what I know, This song was written by John Sebris who now lives in Fort Myers, FL. He wrote the words for his wife, Maureen and sold the lyrics to the Weavers for $50.00. When I moved to Fort Myers in 1986, I met John and Maureen. John played guitar for the Clancy brothers and seemed to know every word to every song. At my high scool, Sacred Heart Academy, in Hempstead, Ny in 1964, Seven Daffodils was one of our favorite songs. Visiting John and Maureen around 1987, I asked John if he knew the words to "Seven Daffodils" That's when I learned that he had written the words and sold them to the Weavers.

hi everyone
i learned this song from a Berkeley folksinger in the early 1960s
without attribution
and without the reprise of the last line
perhaps The Brothers Four added that
i accept Lee Hays and Fran Mosely as the authors
although i didn't know it until i read all these notes!

I just heard this wonderful song for the first time this morning, on FolkAlley.com, sung by Jonathon Edwards. And then I found the song on an album of his called Cruising America's Waterway. And one can hear the song by different artists on YouTube... just Google the song name.

I have no idea how to solve the mystery as to who actually wrote the song. Anybody know the email address of Sherlock Holmes?

The most widely played version on radio, in the 1960's, was that of the Limeliters. Glenn Yarbrough sang it, virtually, as a solo and may have recorded it on one of his own records as well. It begins in a minor (I used A minor) and progresses to D major.

I had made these corrections prior to sending the note, above, but they disappeared in transit. In the version I sang, it was Am to C, not D.

         Am                F       Dm/G
Not one paper dollar to crinkle in my hand.

I've just been trying to find who recorded "Seven Golden Daffodils". I used to have the 'single' and this was the 'B' side. I remembered the words "I can show you the mornin', on a thousand hills" etc. but couldn't remember the name of the group who sang it. Now it all comes flooding back - The Mojos - "Nothing at all" being the 'A' side.
All I need to do now is find a download for it!

"Seven Daffodils" is Track 4 on her "All Good Times" album.

My beautiful recording is by the Brothers Four from the late 60's, - I fell in love with it and since I don't play by ear, a few years ago, a friend wrote it our for me for piano with chords, and for Clarinet solo, and with piano. I have been able to play it on Clarinet at our campsite at Point Pelee, as well as on piano or clarinet at home. I recommend this version for the the gorgeous melody and the lovely blending voices they had.
