04 Mar 02 - 12:52 AM (#662261) Subject: RE: Tune Add: Graf Spee & Rothiemurchus Rant From: JohnInKansas Fiddler Magazine has developed a small following in my area, but I don't really know how widely it circulates. It appears to be a well managed rag, and touches a fairly wide range of musical styles. The current (Spring) issue includes a "bio" on Seamus Connolly, an article on "Afro-Cuban Salsa Fiddling," a "bio" on Gilles Apap and his group "Colors of Invention," a "historical" report on "Fox Hunt" Charlie Bowman, an article on Anton Tesla - with some interesting notes on Russian "Gypsy Stage" music, and a brief article on Bobby Horton. About a half-dozen tune scores are typical for an issue. They have a web site at www.fiddler.com, but as of this afternoon the Spring issue had not been posted. Not a commercial - but it seems only fair to cite the source, and I don't know how well known they are. John |

04 Mar 02 - 01:09 AM (#662267) Subject: RE: Tune Add: Graf Spee & Rothiemurchus Rant From: JohnInKansas I think maybe I better quit tryin' to type and just copy and paste everything. The correction is: http://www.fiddle.com I have checked my rather sparse resources on Robert Burns, and don't find anything resembling the "Lassie wi' the lint-white locks." I don't find anything at Mudcat/Digitrad, but confess to being less than adept at searching wi'a Scots accent'. Can anyone provide a lyric (or does anyone think it's worth providing a lyric). I can see several other issues that might be worth discussion, but I think I'll put my fat fingers to bed for now. John |
04 Mar 02 - 09:40 AM (#662386) Subject: Add: Lassie wi' the Lintwhite Locks From: Malcolm Douglas LASSIE WI' THE LINTWHITE LOCKS
(Robert Burns, 1794. Tune: Rothiemurche's Rant)
Now Nature cleeds the flowery lea,
Chorus:
Lassie wi' the lintwhite locks,
The primrose bank, the wimpling burn,
And when the welcome simmer shower
As Cynthia lights, wi' silver ray,
And should the howling wintry blast Burns' inspiration for this piece was Jean Lorimer, who he referred to in his works by the "poetic" name of Chloris. He insisted that his relationship with this particular Muse, who inspired some 24 songs, was purely platonic. |
