We do a show with 5th grade students from all across the Napa Valley with musicians who were connected with the Napa Valley Folk Music Festival. We already do Yankee Doodle. Derby Ram, while it may have been George W's favorite, isn't really appropriate... We have some sea shanties, Shaker songs, Juba and lots of wonderful songs in minor keys full of doom and gloom. I'm betting that someone out there has that song I'm looking for. Thanks again. |

09 Mar 02 - 08:48 PM (#666013) Subject: RE: Upbeat songs of early america From: erwanda55 That's a very good question. How about no later than 1840. To be honest, we've never been that exact. Kids study the Revolutionary war, so we try to keep things roughly around there but like I said, we've never been really exact. Does it make a difference as to what you'd suggest? |

We've had great fun with "Soldier, soldier won't you marry me." We take along props including a tricorn hat, breeches, Jefferson shirt, buckle shoes---and a woven market basket. We find a girl and boy willing to act out what's happening as the song progresses. For many upbeat American folk songs suitable for children, find copies of Ruth Crawford Seeger's books: "American Folk Songs for Children," "Animal Folk Songs for Children," and "American Christmas Songs for Children." |
