Lyrics copied from http://www.m-bettencourt.com/full/DOC/color.doc, with a few corrections by me, based on the sound file found at http://www.angelfire.com/in4/jim640.

CORNBREAD AND BUTTER BEANS

CHORUS:
Cornbread and butter beans and you across the table,
Eating beans and making love as long as I am able,
Hoeing corn and cotton, too, and when the day is over,
Ride a mule, a crazy fool, and love again all over.

Goodbye. Don't you cry. I'm going to Lou'siana,
Buy a dog and a big fat hog and marry Suzy Anna.
Sing-song, ding-dong, gonna take a trip to China,
Cornbread and butter beans, and there to Carolina. CHORUS

Wearing shoes and drinking booze is going against the Bible.
A necktie will make you die and cause you lots of trouble.
Streetcars and whiskey bars and kissing pretty women,
Whoa, man, that's the end of a terrible beginning. CHORUS

Can't read and don't care and education's awful.
Raising heck and writing checks, that ought to be unlawful.
Silk hose and pretty clothes are just a waste of money.
I can see how glad you'll be to marry me, my honey. CHORUS

[As sung by the Carolina Sunshine Trio on the various-artists compilation "WPAQ: Voice of the Blue Ridge Mountains," Rounder CD #404, 1999.]

How widespread is the term "butter beans"? Do bags of frozen Limas have the title "butter beans" on the label in some parts of the world?

I grew up calling them butter beans, because that's what my mother called them when she fixed them. I didn't pay much attention to packaging in those days, so I don't know what they were "officially" called. (I grew up in St. Louis, MO; my parents grew up in Arkansas and Kentucky.)

I live in Minnesota now, and I rarely eat them any more because my wife doesn't like them, so I'm not quite sure what the labels say.

I just checked the Green Giant web site (a Minnesota-based company), and I see that under "frozen side dishes" they list "baby lima beans" and under "canned vegetables" they list "butter beans." What's up with that? Are we making a class distinction here?

I also checked Birds Eye. I see that one of their brand names, McKenzie's, which seems to be a Southern-oriented brand, lists "baby lima beans," "butter beans," and "speckled butter beans." All of Birds Eye's other brands—Birds Eye, C & W (which apparently stands for "California & Washington"), and Freshlike—mention only "lima beans" or "baby lima beans."

Wikipedia says they are the same species: Phaseolus lunatus.

"Lima" beans are usually some shade of green, and "Butter" beans are usually tan in color. They taste different also, at least to me. I've always thought of them and separate and distinct, but close kin. And then there's "Fava" beans.

G                                                                                     C
Cornbread and Butter Beans, and you across the table,
D                                                                                 G
Eating beans and making love, as long as I am able.

Repeat throughout the whole song. If that isn't a good key for you to sing, you can try D, G and A instead.

I've always wondered about the difference between green and white/tan lima beans ~ are they exactly the same plant but picked at different stages of development? Or completely different but closely-related species?

Seeing this song title reminds me of another: anyone have complete lyrics and/or music/chords/tab for "Beans and Cornbread Had A Fight"?

The video contributor of the last video whose link I posted included the words to the song Beans & Cornbread. Here they are:

BEANS AND CORNBREAD
[Louis Jordan]

Beans and Cornbread had a fight
Beans knocked Cornbread out of sight
Cornbread said, "Now that's alright.
Meet me on the corner tomorrow night.

"I'll be ready, I'll be ready tomorrow night. (2x)
I'll be ready, I'll be ready to have a fight."
That's what Beans said to Cornbread.
"I'll be ready tomorrow night."

Beans told Cornbread, "You ain't straight.
You better wake up or I'll gash your gate.
Been in this pot since half past two,
swelling and puffing and almost due."

"I'll be ready, I'll be ready tomorrow night."
That's what Beans told Cornbread.
"Always getting mad at me.
I ain't mad at you.
I'll be ready tomorrow night.
I'll be ready, mmmmm."

Beans grabbed Cornbread by the toe.
"Beans," said Cornbread, "let me go."
Cornbread said, "I'll lay you low.
I'm gonna fight you, you so-and-so."

"Meet me on the corner.
Meet me on the corner tomorrow night."
That's what Beans said to Cornbread.
"You're so bad, you always wanna fight.
Meet me on the corner tomorrow night,
and I'm gonna beat the hell out'ya.
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh.
Meet me on the corner tomorrow night."

Beans hit Cornbread on the head.
Cornbread said, "I'm almost dead."
Beans told Cornbread, "Get up, man.
You know that we go hand-in-hand."

"Beans and Cornbread,
Beans and Cornbread, hand-in-hand."
That's what Beans said to Cornbread,
"We should stick together hand-in-hand.
We should hang out together like wieners and sauerkraut.
We should stick together like hot dogs and mustard.
We should get up every morning,
and hang out together like sisters and brothers.
["Yeah!"]
Every Saturday night, we should hang out like chitlins and potato salad.
["Yeah!"]
Like strawberries and shortcake.
["Yeah!"]
Like corned beef and cabbage.
["Yeah!"]
Like liver and onions.
["Yeah!"]
Like red beans and rice.
["Yeah!"]
Like bagel and lox.
["Yeah!"]
Like sour cream and biscuits.
["Yeah!"]
Like bread and butter.
["Yeah!"]
Like hot cakes and molasses."
["Yeah!"]

Beans told Cornbread,
["Yeah!"]
"It makes no difference what you think about me,
["Yeah!"]
but it makes a whole lotta difference what I think about you.
["Yeah!"]
We should hang out together like hot cakes and molasses."
["Yeah!"]
That's what Beans said to Cornbread.

'Cause Beans and Cornbread,
they go hand-in-hand.

Here's another cornbread and beans song that I found that on YouTube. This is sung and played to fiddle & banjo accompaniment:

Does anyone know the title, composer, and words to that song which isn't the same as the "Beans And Cornbread" song or the "Cornbread and Butterbeans" song?

Butterbeans are a lot larger than lima beans and they're tan, not green. And yummy!!!

Well, there're also a species of large white cannellinis called Italian butter beans. Also, the difference between the green and tan limas is a difference in maturity. The greens are fresh and tender, the tans are starchier and ready to dry.

There are two main types, the larger 'lima' type and the smaller Sieva type. The larger form, in cultivational history, was developed in Andean South America while the smaller developed in Central America and Mexico.

In the Carolinas, 'butterbean' refers to the smaller, Sieva type, pole-cultivated. In packaging, sometimes called 'baby'.
In other areas, 'butterbean' refers to a large, whitish variety, Phaseolus lunatus var. macrocarpus.

This is a source of confusion. The song is Carolina 'southern', so usually the small Sieva variety is meant, and it is a pole bean.

Both types are green when immature. In most cookbooks, lima bean means small and green while butterbean is the large yellow type.

There also are red, brown, black or mottled varieties.

Not sure what is meant when Europeans talk about the beans.

Seed source:
Lima Beans
I see that Carolina limas are sold out for 2010. The best!
Henderson cultivar also listed. Order early spring.

If there is not already a thread regarding Mahalla, you will likely have better luck in getting the information you seek by starting a thread seeking the lyrics or chords to that particular song than by adding a post to this thread about an entirely different song.

Alternatively, if you are interested in the lyrics or chords to a number of songs as done by the Carolina Chocolate Drops, you might consider starting a thread titled something like Chord/lyr req. Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Good luck with your search. Hope some one on Mudcat can be of help.

Here's the original recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHpbdPWR7S8

And Johnny Tyler's version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nm7D54ZpHyM

The first recording, by the Carolina Sunshine Trio, was recorded between 1947 and 1950 (but I'm going to guess 1947 as there seems to be at least some people who believe that that's the original recording), and the second one was released in October of 1948 as a B-side to "Little Rock A-R-K" (SOURCE 1, SOURCE 2)

The Carolina Chocolate Drops credit it as "traditional," but that is wrong. According to SOURCE 2 above it's written by Don Whiston (not the hockey player, I'm assuming), who also wrote some songs for Merle Travis and Eddy Arnold.

Thanks, Janie, that means a lot. Really all it is is perseverance. I guess with time you start to get a little better, but all it really takes is being able to sift through 50 useless things to try and find the 1 good one
