I heard Carol Denney sing this amazing song at a local singer's circle in San Francisco last month. I can't create MP3 files but Carol was kind enough to send me a cassette of herself singing the song if anyone out there in Mudcat Land would be willing to make a MIDI or MP3 of it. I told Carol I'd be posting the song at Mudcat.

Who Built This House
Composed by Carol Denney (8/13/00) the last day of the August Music Heritage Festival in Elkins, West Virginia

Who built this house of wood and stone
Whose was the blood, whose was the bone
Whose was the sweat that brought to bear
This house so fine that's standing there
Who built this house

Chorus:
Who built this house, who carved this stone
Who built this house, no hand alone
Who built this house you're living in
Who built this house

Who built this house of wood so fine
From forests far away from mine
Who mined the silver and the gold
Whose was the back that bore this load
Who built this house

Who built this house upon this land
Where all these well-dressed people stand
Who built this house, who labored long
Where does this wealth in truth belong
Who built this house

Reminds me a little of the spirit of Fred Small's song "Housewarming", the chorus of which runs:

Chorus:

We are building a house growing tall before our eyes,
Stone on stone watch it rise;
We are building a house with our hands, with our songs,
May it stand as long as our lives.

Thanks, Richard.
