BS: Cornbread & the Weird Synchronicity of Mudcat

Okay folks.....Bear with me here a minute and all will be made clear........First, many of you remember the great Cornbread Recipe thread we ran just a short while back and all the great recipes on it. This is the thread.

Some of you noticed I was gone for a week or so and checked with my friend kat to see what was up. I asked her to keep it off the 'Cat but to let those who asked know that I was in the hospital AGAIN! Geeziz, it gets embarassing after awhile because I'm not in bad shape, look healthy and all that, it's just that this bizarre stuff keeps happening to me! I wasn't going to post this thread except for another of those strange things that occur around here.

Yep, another dumbass thing happens to me. Every once in awhile over the past two years I've had gas cramps...last about 2-3 days and go away. Gawd knows I'm never constipated or anything (generally far from it!) but this last time about 3 weeks ago, the cramping just kept hanging on and getting worse until last Friday (3/1/02) I was in excruciating pain and had started running a fever. Infections can kill the new heart valve so I figured it was time to go to the ER. Actually it was well past the time and by the time I got there I was hitting toxic shock as my own body decided to attack me.....again.

Diverticulitis. It had turned into an immflammatory mass and after assorted tests and heavy antibiotics, I started to come out of it. Now I feel fantastic, don't look or feel sick and in fact I'm doing great....9 loads of wash yesterday, meals, dishes, took the kids to the mall, went bowling for a few hours today......feeling fine now.

The Infectious Disease Doc and I are getting way too close! After the cellulitis in August and now this........But, no damage to the mitral valve and now we need to decide whether this is controllable with diet or whether I'll need to have surgery. We'll know more in a few weeks. But once again, the dumb shit seems to happen to me, but like the "Cat" I am, I seem to have at least 9 lives!

Remember after the fire that Richard Pryor had a few different stories as to what happened? Anyway, one of them was really funny and as I lay there in the ER it came to me. Richard said, "All these people freebasing and did you ever hear of anybody blowing up? 10 million motherfuckers freebasing and I blow up! Why me?"............That's about it. 10 million assholes with Diverticular disease and I blow up!!!

OR SO I THOUGHT UNTIL I RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING FROM ANOTHER 'CATTER WHO HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF MY SITUATION!!!................ Thanks to your wonderful cornbread recipe...the one with the creamed corn, peppers, cheese etc ....I ended up in the hospital for 10 days! I'll explain... I've had a very delicate "digester" for a number of years. Every Dr. that I went to would put me on anti-spasm drugs and send me on my way saying that I had irritable bowel syndrom and not to worry. After eating all that wonderful cornbread, I was in such agony that I passed out. My girls got me to hospital . They determined that I had a massive peritonial infection and put me on the anti-anthrax drug for 10 days. My colon had absessed and perforated. After several tests they were able to see that a large portion of my colon is very badly diseased and has to be removed.

It seems I have been suffering from diverticulosis for years and didn't know it. The Dr. feels fairly confident that he can do a resection with out doing a colostomy . So to make a long story short ... I just want to thank you sincerely for your recipe and to let you know that Mudcat literally saved my life. I was on the brink so to speak and they we're able to fix me up enough that I will be healthy enough for my surgery in a couple of weeks. I wanted to start a thread about this but thought better of it ... I'd be the "butt of shitty jokes" so to speak ... perfect flame material! Just wanted to tell you about another "Mudcat Miracle"!

**********************************************************************

Now how's that for a strange coincidence???? I called her and told her the story and we both cracked up (so to speak).......We were in the hospital at the same time 2000 miles apart with the same problem and it was something neither of us had even thought about having before. If the 'Catter in question doesn't want to check in here it's fine, as I do respect her privacy too.....But the weird synchronicity of the 'Cat is often so bizarre that I thought you'd enjoy the tale and have a laugh or two over it!

Great story, Spaw! Synchronicity is indeed a mindblower at times.
As I was reading the beginning of your post I thought, "Maybe he should stop drinking milk" - but the diagnosis said diverticu -litis? -losis? A friend of mine has the same thing but I'm not really sure what it is. Anyway, I've been enjoying your posts here for a while (I've been a member less than six months, so I guess I'm still a newbie), and my thoughts and best wishes go out to you and the unnamed member you're quoting.

But I'll think twice about trying any of those cornbread recipes...

Cheers,
Michael

..."losis" is the disease. ..."itis" is a major flare up. Diverticular is pockets in the gut where foods hang up and then cause infection. Usually hard things or chunky things like nuts & corn are what causes the problems.

Yeah Sorch, you got it. Although the nuts and corn thing is coming under scrutiny as having less to do with it than they previously thought. In the main, the disease of Diverticulosis is brought on by low fiber diets and so is virtually unknown in Africa and China. In the US it is still on the rise and as one Doc said to me, "Like gray hair and wrinkles, if you live long enough here you will eventually have it."

Since about age 35, I've eaten a pretty high fiber diet but before that I ate well, but certainly not high fiber. Constipation and bloating, often symptoms of the syndrome, are problems I've never had!!! It does seem that many have this but no one talks much about it and it's often misdiagnosed as happened in the case of the other 'Catter for many years.

Michael, thanks for your thoughts and I've enjoyed your posts since you came on board.

Keep us posted, okay?

Spaw, I believe that DIY enema kits can be purchased on the net for relatively little.

I have never felt the need to experiment personally, but I do know that in Victorian England the procedure was extremely popular. Maybe now is the time for you to try it out.

Who knows, you might even get to enjoy it. If it was good enough for Queen Victoria ....

Subject: Lyr Add: SOME LITTLE BUG IS GOING TO FIND YOU
From: GUEST,ghost

According to this Bert Williams song there ain't much that one can consume and not expect to reap a whirlwind of woe.

SOME LITTLE BUG

In these days of indigestion it is oftentimes a question
As to what to eat and what to leave alone.
Every microbe and bacillus has a different way to kill us
And in time they all will claim us for their own.
There are germs of every kind in every food that you can find
In the market or upon the bill of fare.
Drinking water's just as risky as the so-called "deadly" whiskey
And it's often a mistake to breathe the air.

CHO: For some little bug is going to get you someday.
Some little bug will creep behind you some day.
Then he'll send for his bug friends
And all your troubles they will end,
For some little bug is gonna find you someday.

The inviting green cucumber, it's most everybody's number
While sweet corn has a system of its own.
Now, that radish seems nutritious, but its behavior is quite vicious
And a doctor will be coming to your home.
Eating lobster, cooked or plain, is only flirting with ptomaine,
While an oyster often has a lot to say.
And those clams we eat in chowder make the angels sing the louder
For they know that they'll be with us right away.

For some little bug is going to get you someday.
Some little bug will creep behind you some day.
Eat that juicy sliced pineapple; and the sexton dusts the chapel
Oh, yes, some little bug is gonna find you some day.

When cold storage vaults I visit, I can only say, "What is it
Makes poor mortals fill their systems with such stuff?"
Now, at breakfast prunes are dandy if a stomach pump is handy
And a doctor can be called quite soon enough.
Eat a plate of fine pig's knuckles and the headstone cutter chuckles
While the gravedigger makes a mark upon his cuff.
And eat that lovely red bologna and you'll wear a wood kimona
As your relatives start packing up your stuff.

Those crazy foods they fix, they'll float us 'cross the River Styx
Or start us climbing up the Milky Way.
And those meals they serve in courses mean a hearse and two black horses
So before meals, some people always pray.
Luscious grapes breed appendicitis, while their juice leads to gastritis
So there's only death to greet us either way.
Fried liver's nice, but mind you, friends will follow close behind you
And the papers, they will have nice things to say.

For some little bug is going to get you someday.
Some little bug will creep behind you some day.
Eat that spicy bowl of chili, on your breast they'll plant a lily.
Oh, yes, some little bug is gonna find you some day.

And me, stealing from ghost: (great song, BTW)
When nature calls, it's peristalsis
Makes things go, it's "sphincter - ho!" my friend
But some things, alas, just will not pass
And ya know they're gonna get you in the end

Well, that sounds serious, 'Spaw, diverassholitis is nothing to screw around with. A diverted asshole can be a pain in the ass, or worse. Sort of like when a river changes course. Where did this new aperture appear? Above or below the waste, uh, waist? Or is it that a previously owned orfice becomes reprogramed to produce poo? Like your ear? How would that affect your hearing? Your social life. These are indeed serious questions. And we want answers to these questions, don't we Mudcatters! We want to know to where 'spaw's effluviam has been diverted. If only for self-protection. Is projectile pooping a concertn. Just where is your asshole, Mister? Some will want evidence, possibly photographs with circles and arrows explaining location and dimensions. Personally I will take your word for it. Oh. And I hope you get better real soon. Chance

Hopefully, it's safe to jump in here now. Maybe the "shitty jokes" are over and done with! Besides, I can't let Spaw shoulder all the responsibility for informing you lot of the nastiness of diverticulitis. Yes, tis I, the "Udder Mudder" of which Spaw speaks. Feeling better now, just waiting for my surgery date. I knew for years that something was wrong...I chose to ignore it.... big mistake. Please everyone, listen to your bodies. Get "scoped" .... it may not be pleasant but it sure as hell beats the alternative! Having rot gut is shitty business ... especially if you have to have a colostomy bag. Please pay attention folks ... and take care.

I'm sorry group that I chose to leave this off the 'Cat, but for the love of God, it just seems that everytime I turn around there's another thread about Spaw being in the hospital....and I swear to you, I'm not that unhealthy!!! I appreciate your kind words and I always know I have so many great friends behind me......Wait, make that "supporting me."

And Lyrical Lady, I'm glad you decided to check in here because as you and I discussed the other day, this does seem to be one of those "unspoken" diseases. And of course there are a lot of folks here who will be wanting to keep you in their thoughts as the surgery comes up.

LL and I really did have a good laugh over this, but the disease itself is no laughing matter as you can wind up dead all too quickly, even with the best of antibiotic care. In some cases the only option left is a colostomy and though you can live quite succesfully with one, it's not the way anyone would really want to go if there is an option. In this case, the best cure is often surgery to remove the problem section of bowel.

So do yourselves a favor and when you have "gas pains" that last more than a few days, get checked!!

Spaw

Um... I don't think you were supposed to use habanero peppers in that recipe...

Seriously, though, Catspaw, I'm glad to hear that things turned out okay, with no damage to that mitral valve. And Lyrical Lady, I'm glad to hear that a colostomy doesn't appear to be necessary (though a resection can't be any fun).

As a person who's had colon problems for the last 25 years or so – since I was 21 (ulcerative colitis plus a couple of pre-cancerous polyps removed a couple of years ago) – I'll reiterate the advice given here: pay attention to your bowel and GET IT CHECKED!!! If you get a problem treated and you know something's still not right, be more aggressive about getting to the bottom of it (if you'll pardon the expression!).

PermaThread, Spaw.

I was making light of the whole thing because...well, because Spaw started it. Or you did, with the information about the cornbread. And you two have made it through, and I'm very GLAD about that.

My mom had diverticulitis and had a chunk of colon removed. I was with her after surgery and tried to get her to wake up. I'm not sure she even know where she was, but she had enough sense to mutter something like "I don't think I want to wake up right now." You should have heard her talking about the pillow. As much pain as she was in, I think and her sense of humor kicked in because she was so relieved to be on the other side of the trauma. She had a few choice words about the diet, too.

I'm glad you two are on the mend. As for me, I should probably learn to enjoy shots of Metamucil. (You lick the oat bran, drink the shot, then suck on a prune.)

Maybe I can give a loaf to one of the ex-wives to see if they explode first. How about the US govt. airdropping thousands of loaves on the Taliban, much cheaper than smart bombs. Could be biological warfare though by the sound of it.

Spaw, others, look into some of the work Barry Sears has done on diet and disease. His Zone diet books make a lot of sense. We wouldn't put just any medicine into our mouths without knowing what it is for or what the side effects are, yet we eat food (especially the processed stuff) without any thought to what it does to our bodies. Insulin, carbohydrates, fruits and veggies, protein, they're all subjects we should know more about.

Hey there, you saggy-assed tortoise! ;-) Geez, are you trying to upstage my bad back with this lil' episode, or what? (hahaha) And this cornbread thing -- while I've been 'off me pegs', Dear Hubby has learned to cook (. . . insert group gasp here . . .) and his best dish so far is cornbread. Is the Higher Power(s) trying to tell me something?

Amos told me that he sent you a soundfile of the song he and I wrote for you awhile back, It's In His Heart to aid in your most recent recovery -- I suggested that we do a rewrite, but he poo-pooed the idea of sending you a song called It's In His Ass.

I love you, ya old buggah. Do what those quacks tell you to do, we all need you more than you know.

Hugs and snogs (yeah, even on that old saggy tortoise ass of yours), Áine
