Thank you all for the good sites. A friend gave me one he had bought at a sale. He was going to make big money on E-Bay. When he saw the prices there he said it wasn't worth the trouble. I have already spent most of one day trying to tune it. It may end up on the wall........Mary

I once had an instrument like this. It was given to me by a couple who I stayed with a lot when I was a child. Mine, also, was manufactured by a company in New Troy, MI.

Unfortunately, while staying in a basement apartment my landlord's son (and/or friends) broke into my apartment and stole it along with the 6 string banjo (yes, I did say 6 strings) that my grandfather gave me.

This was in North Georgia and I'm now in Washington but, I still frequently think of those instruments that went missing.

Can't see that that "violin uke" is a very good way of describing this instrument - from this youtube clip it looks and sounds as if it's more of a variant on the bowed psaltery.

There's a fine Myspace page devoted to the Ukelin. Check it out:

http://www.myspace.com/ukelin

The Ukelin predates the invention of the Bowed Psaltery by at least 3 decades, though many in the Folk World persist in believing the latter instrument to be somehow medieval.
