Electronic percussion

I am learning the Mondola and sometimes play to a metronome. A bit boring, but very good for me. I know I should get out more and play with other people but in the meantime are any cheap and cheerful electronic systems available.

Can I buy a stand alone box that can be programmed with jigs, reels, hornpipes etc. or do I need to buy something that runs through my PC?

Do such devices cost much?

Cheers

I know this might not be helpful, but there's a HUGE range of standalone boxes across a wide range of prices.

My best advice would be to go to a decent music shop and ask to try some out.

If you are just looking for percussion to practise with then there are plenty of midis available on the 'net. Just download the midi file, then put it into any music notation program like Noteworthy, a shareware program which allows you to change the music, e.g. by muting the melody line or adding or deleting arrangements, and then you can print out the music notation, change the tempo for practising, transpose to other keys etc.

A demo version of
Noteworthy

is available here: http://www.ntworthy.com/

But it is cheap to buy and well worth it, too. (Usual disclaimers: no connection with the company, just a satisfied customer).

There are lots of midis of latin and other rhythms available if you do an Internet search.

My suggestion is to look at the Roland/Boss product line. They have several drum machines/rhythm composers across the price spectrum that can be programmed according to your needs.

I use FruityLoops and LOVE it! Do any of the free ones come anywhere close to it?
