Tech: Dodgy Modem?

Subject: Dodgy Modem?
From: John Gray

My system keeps dropping off the server. Sometimes two or three times an hour. When this happens the screen info tells me my phone line is still connected, the timer is still ticking away, but for some reason it's not connected to the ISP.
To get re-connected I have to shut down to icon screen and re-dial the server. My son calls this a "hollow connection", whatever that is. How can I be connected and not connected at the same time? Is it just a matter of disconnecting the internal modem and hooking up to an external one ? Suggestions please.

Have you tried Customer Support at your ISP? It's their problem as much as yours.

ypour ISP has a low modem to customer ratio. In the UK the norm is that ISP's get a percentage of the call charge (if thaat is the deal) so there is incentive to get you paying for the call, but less incentive to connect you to intelligence (or a chat room other than this). If you are locked in to an ISP all you can do is SHOUT at them. Mine is getting like that - my e-mail is locked-in but not my surfing so I will vote with my perfect modem, never yet put a foot wrong cxv vdagas esre jj jo..........

We call this a "connect can't browse"

Top 3 solutions: (for a dial-up connection)

1. Assuming you're using Internet Explorer: clear cache: Tools>Internet Options>click on Delete Files, check "Delete all offline content", click OK.

2. Also in Int. Options, go to "Connections" click "LAN settings", ensure nothing is checked off unless your ISP has told you to set a proxy server. (Uncheck "Automatically Detect Settings")

3. With your Windows CD handy, go to Control Panel, Add-Remove Programs, Windows Setup, uncheck COmmunications, click OK, wait, ignore prompt for reboot, click Add-Remove Programs again and add the check back to Communications, OK, reboot. You'll have to recreate your dialup connection properties in DialUp Networking. Make sure you know the DNS number of your ISP.
