I'm looking for the lyrics (French and English) to this song which was sung by Lucille Starr. In English it starts: "When the sun says good day to the mountains..." and in French: "Quand le soleil dit bonjour au montagne...". Or something pretty close to that. Hope you can help. Thanks.

The words as listed by Sheye are pretty close. I can hear only a few variations from what Lucille Starr sings on her 1991 album which was available in both French and English versions. Alice refers to the French version above~~I have the English version, Songs of Love, Intersound 9101. It is a very nice album, well worth having. I have an old LP, too, but I did not look for it.

The CD lists H. Pease & L. Vincent as writers, and Shapiro, Bernstein & Co. (ASCAP) as publisher.

Lucille Starr also appears on Sylvia Tyson's You Were On My Mind album, Stoney Plain 1140, 1989. They duet on Pepere's Mill and Le Moulin A Pepere, English and French versions of a song they wrote together.

This song slipped into Australian singers' repertoires as just "The French Song", but it was often sub-titled "When the Sun Says Goodbye to the Mountains". It's usually sung in the English translation. A friend of mine learned it in about 1950, in Queensland. I remember it from around the same time in Melbourne, but in French.
I came across a hand written copy in a junk shop in Melbourne, in English, about 30 years ago and it had a funny mis-spelling on the word "mountains". It was given as "mounties" so that you get some strange images especially of the girl ON the MOUNTIES.
Someone smarter than me will probably post the tune. Joy

Since the English lyrics seem to have gone away and the original request was for them too, here's how I found it:

From a handwritten scrap of paper not dated, but found about 1970 in Melbourne. I suspect it is not complete.

But there is a different reading of that line (see above):
L'echo que m'emporte la chanson du vent rapelle les souvenirs de toi. "The echo that the song of the wind carries to me brings back memories of you"

I just finished listening to that song a thousand times trying to get the lyrics and I ended up a pretty close version to what I've seen here. I only have a couple of suggestions. I don't hear any je or le before what I believe is ecouter. The next word could easily be "a ma porte" or "m'apporte" they sound the same and that would make the meaning either "hear from my door the songs on the wind" or "hear calling me the songs on the wind". I think that they are plural "les chansons" and I think that the line "Je suis seule et ne veux penser qu'a toi" is "Je suis seule, je n'ai veux penser qu'a toi".

There is also a very nice version by Magnolia, a Cajun band from Massachusetts, on their most recent album, Jolie Coeur (more at http://magnoliacajunband.homestead.com/). In the bridge their English version goes something like:

An old version of this song, sung in English (male vocalist), can be heard on the TV series First Of The Summer Wine. The show was set in the late-1930s and the version played is obviously from that era. If anybody has any information on who might have preformed it please let me know?

The song was written by Larry Vincent (music) and Harry Pease (lyrics) in 1964, and sung in that year by Robert Cogoi. Marcel Martel (1976), Marie King (1977) and Carole Laure (1989).
Lucille Starr called it the "French Song."

The lyrics are those I posted 08 Jul 04, from www.paroles.net, but I posted the one with the repetitive last verse by Carole Laure. The date 1989 was for the Laure recording.

I want to thank everyone who participated in this thread.

I found this thread by googling partial lyrics to this song. I am originally from Maine and that is where my family came from and this song has been a part of my family for as long as I can remember. Everyone would sing it, it would play on record albums, etc... I never truly paid much attention to it until recently.

I have relatives that span from Maine to CT, but my parents have been living in CA. My mother was diagnosed with Leukemia five years ago, and she passed away last week at the City of Hope Hospital after her body developed a huge rejection-oriented infection from a bone marrow transplant. She was a very young 64 years old and her death has been trajic for our family.

She was in the ICU in a sedated coma for three weeks before she passed away. I was there much of that time and my father had recorded her favorite songs on an iPod that played over and over again. Quand Le Soleil was a song she loved so much, he had it on there several times, and so I heard it often while I sat there holding her hand. I remember her singing it and the song has been in my head for the past month. I wanted to find the lyrics.

In 1970 there was a german duo named Adam & Eve.

They combinated the english and the french text an fill up the song with a horrable german text and presented it with the Fischer-Chöre:

Nope. According to the site of the Shapiro Bernstein group, which owns the song: THE FRENCH SONG was a hit in 1964 for songstress Lucille Starr, who also recorded with her husband Bob Regan as "The Canadian Sweethearts." The tune was based on the song, "When The Sun Says `Good-Night` To The Mountain."

The Australian National Library Catalog shows the original song copyright in Sydney by J. Albert & Son, 1937, and material at Shapiro Bernstein (which I now can't find) shows an original date of 1923.

The song is older than you realize!

Wilf Carter, as Montana Slim, recorded WHEN THE SUN SAYS GOODNIGHT TO THE PRAIRIE [some sources say—incorrectly, I think—"...ON THE PRAIRIE"] on a 78-rpm record, Victor 27784-A, 1937, b/w COWBOY'S AIRPLANE RIDE.

Here's what I was able to transcribe from a sound sample:

It's possible Carter was inspired by the Pease/Vincent song, but if so, he has changed the tune considerably, for one thing, making it a waltz.

Gee, the song seems popular, so I'm surprised that I can't find sheet music. I did find a YouTube video of a 1992 performance of the song by Lucie Marotte.
Sounds like a U.S. country song, sung in French. The melody sounds very familiar - I wonder if it has been used for other songs.

What a coincidence.

I just bought a CD by Kerry Christensen (the Utah yodeler who's lived and learned in Europe), and the CD has this song on it in German. I've done a little digging, and I've found it in English, German and French on YouTube.

(Do a search for 'when the sun' and you'll see it.

According to it, the date was 1936, and the title is 'When the sun says goodnight to the mountain.' I mention this because the title varies. The sun can say goodnight, goodbye or even hello.

I transcribed the words from the old Comedy Humorists recording (prob. 1930's) and from the Susan McCann recording (1980's?)

I'm going to post them separately so they are easier to spot.

The old Comedy Humorists recording shows that there is no law that says you have to play this song with a 'country' background.

2. I'm trying to make a MIDI of the tune. Can somebody listen to this on YouTube and tell me what time it's in?

Okay. Thanks. That helps. Now I have to figure out the long notes, you know, those tied notes at the ends of lines that singers sometimes don't hold as long as they should.

I'm getting there.

Funny that the song seems to have been written by Australians, but the only Aus. recording on YouTube is very old.

I have just got this on a "Rex" label 78rpm from the late 30s, by Primo Scala and his Accordion Band with vocal chorus by Bob and Alf Pearson.

Primo Scala was a bestseller on Rex Records with his Accordion Band but he did not really exist. The name was a pseudonym for musical director/producer Harry Bidgood (b. 1898, London, England, d. 1955), who recorded much anonymous dance music in the 20s and 30s. He was pianist with De Groot’s salon orchestra at the Piccadilly Hotel, and recorded on HMV Records with its offshoot, the Piccadilly Dance Band. When De Groot left the hotel, his light music was replaced by an orthodox dance band with Bidgood as pianist. After visiting Berlin in 1924, where the band recorded for Vox, Bidgood resigned, going to Vocalion Records as recording manager and musical director. He made records with his house band, releasing them on the various Vocalion labels (Aco, Beltona, Guardsman, Broadcast, Coliseum, etc.) under names such as the Midnight Merrymakers, Riverside Dance Band and Kentucky Revellers. In the late 20s his regular pool of musicians included Ted Heath, who played for him at the Ritz Hotel and Ciro’s Club. Vocalion dropped all their other labels and concentrated on Broadcast, a more expensive product with a retail price of 2/- (10p). In 1932 the company was taken over by Crystalate, who inaugurated the Imperial, Rex and Eclipse labels, the latter sold by Woolworth’s at 6d each (two-and-a-half pence). Bidgood built up an all-accordion band for Imperial as Roma’s Accordion Band, whose records were also issued on Eclipse under the name of Don Porto. When he decided Rex too should have some of this music, it was released under the name of Primo Scala’s Accordion Band; then Crystalate discontinued Eclipse Records and introduced Crown, another 6d record label, on which Bidgood/Porto/Scala/Roma became Rossini’s Accordion Band. Though they were all the same band it was Scala on whom Bidgood concentrated his efforts, taking the band on radio and music-hall tours. In a more musically ambitious and challenging vein he spent part of the World War II years conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in film music in his capacity as Musical director for British Columbia Pictures.
