The Corries:
In Kirkintilloch there are no pubs,
And I'm sure you wonder why,
My Brother and me, we went on a spree,
And we drank the pubs all dry, all dry,
We drank the pubs all dry.

figures I would find it after posting just the chorus!

THERE ARE NO PUBS IN KIRKINTILLOCH

Chorus:
In Kirkintilloch there's nae pubs
And I'm sure you'll wonder why,
My brother and me, we went on a spree,
We drank the pubs a' dry, a' dry,
Drank the pubs a' dry.

My Granpaw he worked down the pit
And so did my faither tae,
You work like a mule when you leave the school
And you drink on a Saturday, my lads,
Drink on a Saturday

(Ch)

The gaffer doon the pit my lads,
Could scarce believe his een,
For my brother and me we howked mair coal,
Than his latest cuttin' machine, my lads,
His latest cuttin' machine

(Ch)

My faither he was a Glesga man
And my mither come fae Troon,
They baith did say the ither day,
It's time you settled doon, my lads,
It's time you settled doon.

So I think I'll just get married lads
And hae a family tae,
Then we'll use our mits and work in the pits
And drink on a Saturday my lads,
Drink on a Saturday.

Thanks, I spent many hours trying to find it.

You are a better searcher than I!

I've found 3 threads with the lyrics added in 2 of them. The first add is here.

I was felling trees in that area about fourty two years ago with two other fellers and had looked forward all week to having a good Sunday pint or two in Kirkintilloch. That,s when we discovered there are no pubs. I,ve never forgotten that little fact. I also remember that Kirkintilloch rhymes with ferkin pillock, which is what we all felt like as we drove away.

Iain Hamilton - I knew Geordie back in the 60s - he was a lovely man!

Old thread, I know... but in case anyone's concerned. There *are* now pubs in Kirkintilloch.

Kirkie was "dry" for nearly 50 years from about 1920, but there are now 5 or 6 pubs there.

Geordie Hamilton was perhaps the original "Singing Postman"!

This is very strange. I was the original poster on this thread. I had forgotten the info, googled "drank the pubs all dry" 10 years later, and this was the first link. Crazy

Hi,

I work for the Tobar an Dualchais / Kist o Riches project             www.kistoriches.co.uk    The project was set up to digitise, catalogue and make available online thousands of hours of sound recordings from all over Scotland. The recordings come from the School of Scottish Studies, BBC Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland's Canna Collection.

We have quite a lot of recordings of Geordie Hamilton which would be great to include on the website. We need to get in touch with his family for permission before any material can go online. I noticed that Iain Hamilton his g.nephew commented on this thread and I'd be grateful if he could contact me at: dualchas@smo.uhi.ac.uk or anyone else who could help me track down relatives of Geordie Hamilton.
Thanks
Fiona
