Help: Advice from Irish friends?

Friends are travelling to Ireland, and their itinerary looks like this:

Thu 3/28 Travel to Killarney Mon Travel to Galway with trips to Inishmore Fri Travel to Killybegs Donegal and Glencolmkille Tues Travel back to Galway

with a side trip sometime to Doolin.

Any suggestions of musical things not to be missed? This is my mother-in-law and her husband, travelling with a group but willing to sneak off for the the right opportunity, I expect ;)

Dani

In Galway check out the following Pubs (Bars) :

Sean O Neachtain (Cross St) The Crane (Crane St) Taafe's (Shop St) The Quay's (Quay St) Roisin Dubh (Dominic St?). Mick Taylor's next door is also a nice pub, but there isn't always music there, and it isn't always trad (but its usuallly good either way).

There are a good few other pubs with music, but it tends to vary from time to time. You are almost certain to find a good session in one of the ones listed above. I might just run in to them as I'm going to Galway for Easter myself.

Nice to hear that Neactain and the Quay are still there. Last time I was in the Quays, around 84, there is a big modle of a Galway Hooker on the wall (A sailing vessle) So... I said, "I'll sing a song I know about a Hooker in a pub..." and I sang the great song from Jimmy Spiris...
I saw you walking the streets of the harbour
Lady so fine dressed in Calico
Wives of the farmers, gather their husbands
Mercants drop their goods
as you walk by so slow...

One of the great songs about the working girls... Cheers Larry

Declan - Is the King's Head still there? Got thrown out of there in the spring of '82... long story ;-)

Have breakfast at Bewleys (sp?) in Galway! There was music at Jury's when I was there... but I'm not sure it's "not to be missed..."

I'm not familiar with the King's Head. I don't live in Galway just like to hang out there evey now and then.

Hi there!

I've been delving into archived topics, and found your input on the gaelic songs very interesting and informative. I wonder, do you have a website yourself? I'd love to poke around there if you do! You are, after all, the Phillipa that Áine Cooke refers to, aren't you?

you have to stop in Doolin....just south of galway bay, between galway and the cliffs of moher. that's where to find great trad. music. be prepared for alot of american country/western...they love it in ireland. actually found more irish music back here in the States.

If you go to Doolin and see Mary Shannon, tell her to come back to the US and get to work! Cheers Larry

If you go to Glencolumbcille be sure to check out the waterfall (it's near the beach and a beautiful spot) As for music....the youth hostel there is run by a woman called Mary. Anything going on in and around Glencolumbcille, she'll be sure to know (there's also a beautiful view from up there!!!
