Since I've had Sorcha Dorcha playin' and singin' to me all day -- me thinks that CD has a permanent place in the CD changer (hehehe) -- I'm thinkin' I'll just have to hurry up with my own wee offering to send to you . . . may I please have your permission to sing and record Engine 33 on it? I'm thinking of an acapella version, perhaps with a tin whistle and/or low whistle underneath the vocal (since I can't play the pipes, and you're too far away to come over). I think your idea about beginning and ending the next CD with your beautiful love songs to Genie is a MARVELOUS idea. I can't wait to hear it. So, g'wan, my brother, get busy! Last Tuesday I performed it at Paddy Reilly's and a Scotish band there asked the same and I said the same. I have taken McGrath's version over to the folks of Engine 33 and Ladder 9 (they loved it) and will take them all the other versions... wouldn't it be nice for them to have versions from all over? thanks again, Larry |

There was an ol' fella there, who pulled his tin whistle out of his pocket and played along while I sang a lullaby as Gaeilge . . . and in my mind I can just hear him playin' along while you sing this fine, fine song. Maybe you could be having the songs in between in some way telling the story of the years in between. I don't mean so much the personal story, the things happening in the world that prompted songs. And the linking idea of loyalty and solidarity, which is, from what I've seen of your songs, Larry, a continuing theme.
As you say the new song is short for you - I have a feeling it might grow an extra verse - there's a lot compressed into that last verse. From the thread about commitment here on the Mudcat, we know what you are talking about - but I'm not sure that it'd come over to a listener.
And maybe one quibble - I'm not sure about that last line, especially the "ounce"; and does "commitment" as a word have the strength of "anchor" and "loyalty" and "true"? I think this is one of the occasions where, if it was my song, I might try writing out the thought I'm trying to get across in prose, and then see about turning it into verse. |

As to a red haired girl a good reason not to fish, it is concidered bad luck to pass a red haired girl on the way to fish, and many a fisher passed up a good day of fishing for that reason, all the more reason to marry one! One of my favorite cds, now. I am a little uncertain about your meaning in the last two lines of your song. Do you mean "you are offering" rather than your? "Commitment" seems fine to me. Ounce? Drop? I dunno, you can throw a Thesaurus at it and come up stilted or no better. (I used to have a copy of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, made up to look like a school composition. It was surrounded by the teacher's corrections and comments; the sense of the speech was completely lost) |

And I'm remembering that Engine 33 went through a few changes between the way InOBU posted them first and the way they settled down in his recorded version. Songs do that.
They are a bit like shoes that way, you have to wear them to stretch them till they are right for you. Or musical instruments - you need to play a bit before they sound right with you playing them. |
