He knows only that the title is "Darkest Dark" and some lyrics he remembers "in the shadow of your darkness, in the coolness of your depth... that is about all he can remember. "He thinks it is a very old song considered a ballad or folk song." That's a good one; the song was written in the `60s and recorded by The Youngbloods on Elephant Mountain.. The only folk connections, however tenuous, are that onetime Fairport Convention vocalist Ian (now Iain) Matthews recorded it on his 1976 solo album Go For Broke, and American-Irish band Solas in 2002 on The Edge of Silence. The song has been covered numerous time by artists such as Eric Burdon, Richie Havens, and Robert Plant. |
