Tara TV, the channel which broadcasts Irish TV to the UK, has been put into the hands of liquidators by the High Court in Dublin. The troubled station will be off air by the end of April after Mr Justice Brian McCracken heard it had debts of 22.8m euros (£14.1m). It is expected all 20 staff at its London and Derry offices will be made redundant. Tara was launched in 1997 as a joint venture between United Pan-Europe, which had an 80% stake, and the publicly-owned Irish station RTE. It carries much of RTE's content to the UK on cable and satellite including The Daniel O'Donnell Show and The Late Late Show, which was famously hosted by Gay Byrne until 1999.

I only hope the cable company I use (ntl) starts putting out some Irish channels. But I'm not too hopeful.
But I'm astonished if there really isn't an Irish channel on American TV. If there isn't it just goes to show that these guys are not as smart as they like to make out. |

I find this limitation ridiculous, but I guess it's to do with the cost of screening bought-in programmes and films, which make up a very high proportion of their output. The total potential audience on the island of Ireland is about 5.5 million, and RTE presumably pay screening rights based on that figure. If their stations were to be available to all Sky cardholders, they might be forced to pay many times more. |

Typical of RTE they are a true Free State Station, Sky say it is not theit policy, and blame RTE for holding out. As usual the manana complex comes to the fore as RTE say their Programmes will be available in two months, don`t hold your breath. Ard Mhacha
