Work is stumping up for me to go on a study tour following the highway of the humble soybean. On Saturday 22nd June 2002, I fly into Chicago, get to see town on Sunday, and do the Board of Trade on Monday. Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday nights I am in Lafayette, Indiana, and then Thursday and Friday nights in New Orleans. Saturday 29th I fly back to Chicago and back over the pond to Blighty. I can't bring my squeezer, but should be able to sling a fiddle on the plane. Can any of my Mudmates recommend any sessions on any of the nights in any of the places. The Locator doesn't list anyone in the cities concerned, but where better to ask than here? Skipjack |

From: catspaw49 "A charmed life is about to take another undeserved turn and deposit me in the States for a week."..........That's what you think now because you haven't been to Lafayette. My best advice is to enjoy the time you have in Chicago and New Orleans because those three nights in Lafayette will be the longest you ever spent. Like western Ohio and through Illinois, you are in the heart of midwestern farm country and to say it's flat is understatement. If a dog takes a crap, it qualifies as a major hill in the area. Additionally though you can visit the end of the earth which is just outside Lafayette! You're a hundred miles from Chicago and 70 miles from Indianapolis which means you are in the middle of nowhere. Outside of crop talk, I'm sure if you stop by any local diner you can get into a thrilling argument over the merits of various recipes for corn relish. ENJOY!!!!!! Spaw |

From: Skipjack K8 Thanks Wizzy, have done as instructed, and hooked up a local rag that lists the Abbey Pub as the jumping hot spot for a Sunday night. Also, I hadn't apreciated our own great Art Thieme is a Chicagan, and proud of it. Spaw, I was coming over all Bridges of Madison, and you've got Mordakai coming out of the corn. Scary. Never fear, I can talk Tractor. I'll closely question Lady McMoo when I'm round her gaff next month, see what she made of Chicago Skipjack |

From: catspaw49 Skippy, you'll really love staying there but be sure you get Cabin 12 at "Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss Motor Court" because it has the new roof and the indoor plumbing although the shower stall is rusted out pretty bad. Hey....just jokin' ......I'm a "Heartland" native and I can make a few about Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.......We can take it......and by gawd we have the best county fairs in the world! Lots of festivals too. I mean we'll celebrate anything. There are over a hundred in Ohio alone celebrating the joys of everything from asparagus to zuchini (really!) including soybeans (that one's about 25 miles from my house), popcorn, clay, glass, strawberries......you name it, we got it! Well almost....except underwear......We used to have an underwear festival at a little place outside of Dayton where there was a factory, but they stopped it because it "fell below community standards" when an "uncouth" element started attending (I'm completely serious here). 04 Apr 02 - 11:16 AM (#682831) Subject: RE: Chicago Lafayette & New Orleans Catters? From: irishajo I used to live in Lafayette. Not a whole lot going on there musically, but you might try Java Roaster or Knickerbockers Saloon downtown. I guess you'll miss the Indiana Fiddler's Gathering, but I'll give the link in case anyone else is interested. I might drive down there for it myself.link. If all else fails, you can go to West Lafayette and party with the college kids, or go to the Neon Cactus and learn how to line dance. |
